A missing factor is that the car needs to also decide how likely it is for each subject to die and factor that in too. Going 25 mph into a barrier may or may not kill a passenger, but on the other hand the human may leap out of the way in time.
Thought about that at first. I then realized that when they say death they mean certain death. So you were obviously not asked about a scenario where the car is going just 25 MPH.

I realized by mine how they categorized me as wanting to hurt criminals much more than others, which was totally untrue, as there were other reasons why I killed the criminals in that scenario. But cute concept overall.

Of course! Would you be allowed to purchase a self driving car if it's algorithms didn't adhere to halacha ?

I think it's permitted by the same rav who have a hechsher to Chaim Moskowitz's "death switch."

(TimT can dig that one up for you if you like.)

Who do you think you are fooling? You think you are going to pull a quick one on your Creator? Good luck with that.

I think the big picture here is that these decisions will have to be preprogrammed, and people will be writing code instructing the cars for these situations while sitting on office chairs (eta beanbags more likely) far from the event that happens. Who should be deemed the most moral person to determine those standards? They had better be perfect, since the programmers will have plenty of time to think about what the right thing to do is and will have all their wits about them. Its a far more weighty issue than for a similar situation today, where a human driver does not have time to think and has to act on instinct.
I'm an optimist; but only because life isn't going to give me any other good choices.

I can't follow the link to take the test, but I will say this: from a halachik standpoint if your car is on a fatal course to run over 25 people, or u can go to the side and only kill one person, its really not poshut to actively kill someone. That radio show that discusses halacha shailos bezman hazeh had a whole discussion about it. (Headlines in halacha maybe?)
