Starwood Gold Status
« on: April 28, 2011, 03:03:28 PM »
If I am reading the website correctly, only paid stays will earn nights toward Gold status while "award" nights will not (nor will points and cash combined).  So far, for every hotel I've looked at, the best use of my points seems to be a combination of points and $$.  I have about 45k starpoints and I rarely travel right now.

Is there any reason that somebody who rarely travels would want to push himself to get gold status?  I imagine I will travel a bit more in the coming year or two since I've been accumulating points in several programs, but I am only interested in traveling free or cheap.

Starwood Golds and Plats get elite benefits even during their award stays.
Save your time, I don't answer PM. Post it in the forum and a dedicated DDF'er will get back to you as soon as possible.

He wants to earn it.
You can either get an Amex plat, or become an authorized user on someone else's account to get SPG gold

i believe C&P stays 'sort of' count towards award status. it's been discussed on the forums, don't remember now where. won't actually be listed as a stay, but the necessary stay count will go down (IME)

I have gold status now, do they automatically upgrade me when I check in? Or do I have to ask them about it? Also, how do I get the largest upgrade possible?

Most of the time they will automatically put you on a preferred floor, or in a slightly larger room, but Golds don't get much special treatment.  It never hurts to ask about an upgrade.  As for the largest upgrade possible, the war stories vary from the check-in tip to the "it's a super-special occassion" letter to the manager before you arrive.

Does the Amex Platinum extend Gold Status expiration or is it only a benifit as long as I have the Platinum? In other words, before I cancel my platinum, am I calling SPG and asking them for new expiry?
