try using a card at a "new york haimishe" retail store for anything less than $10-$25 (depending on store). you will end up getting verbally abused. (although acc. to credit card company it is illegal) even in the goyishe stores, they give you the look many times. you have to figure if you want the abuse for that amount of credit!
the place i found it works best to spend virtually nothing on the card is 7/11 and similar who do not care how much you spend.
