Yes, because you can easily sell $200 (4 x $50) of AA giftcards for $160+ cash.  The pro-rated monthly cost of the Amex Plat is $37.50.  It only took a few weeks for my reimbursements to post, so you might even still be able to cancel in less than the 60 day cutoff for no annual fee.  Even if it takes an extra month for your reimbursements to post, you will still be better off from a straight economic standpoint.  Worst case, it takes 4 months before you can cancel, which pro-rated is a $150 annual fee.  I got lucky and got reimbursed quickly, which I think is the norm now that they have the programming bugs worked out for the airline fee reimbursements.

You might also want to sign-up for complimentary Priority Pass and Global Entry before you cancel, if you think you might use either of those benefits.

First register for an airline of your choice, then buy 2 $100 virutal gcs in separate transactions, back to back is fine

2 x $100 is easier to buy/sell and in my experience the credit posted automatically 2 days later. But makesure to register for the credit before you buy.

You might also want to sign-up for complimentary Priority Pass and Global Entry before you cancel, if you think you might use either of those benefits.

Priority pass will get cancelled when you cancel the card . Global entry is a bit of a pain and not wort it unless you are really going to use it.

I called on Monday and asked to be matched, they said ok, call us after the 25k from the initial offer posts, and we will manually add the other 75k.

My 25k posted yesterday and I just called this morning and she said she can't add the other 75k until the middle of July? What the hell?

In other news...

I closed my Plat account shortly thereafter and the rep told me I would get a prorated refund for $412.50.  I wanted the full $450 back.

I wasn't sure if I was still within the first 60 days or not, but I mentioned to the rep that if I cancelled within 60 days I should get a full refund.  He transferred me to another rep who agreed with me and gave me a $450 credit to my other AMEX card (I preferred he apply it to my existing Platinum balance and he obliged).

Bottom line - if you are within the first 60 days, definitely ask for the full refund of the $450 if it's not offered at first.  If you are close, ask anyways.  The worst they can do is say no.  Afterwards, I looked at my app date (4/5/11) and was within the first 60 days. 

I wrote them an email to cancel and they just offered to refund the entire $450. And so they did. Sometimes you just get lucky

If they notated like you just said it, then they have to give it to you right after. One condition: you have to pay your bill for that 1K first. If they just notated the offer without details then they can say what you want then u....
