Disposing of metal credit cards
« on: December 26, 2016, 10:55:12 AM »
So I've been out of the card-churning game for a long time, and I have a shoebox full of credit cards I've been shredding recently.  However I have a bunch of old Marriot Rewards and Chase Sapphire Preferred cards with the metal core and I'm not sure what to do with them.  Any ideas?

Call Chase for a return envelope.
Save your time, I don't answer PM. Post it in the forum and a dedicated DDF'er will get back to you as soon as possible.

People actually bother shredding? What for? Just chuck 'em.

Yeah, I just toss them.  Sometimes I cut them in half if I happen to have scissors nearby.  But the risk is exceedingly low.

I fail to see even a small bit of risk...

If you have a quality shredder its kind of enjoyable.

I fail to see even a small bit of risk...
"The credit card's magnetic stripe contains three tracks of data. Each track is about one-tenth of an inch wide. The first and second tracks in the magnetic stripe are encoded with information about the cardholder's account, such as their credit card number, full name, the card's expiration date and the country code. Additional information can be stored in the third track."

At least a little risk

It has the capability but that info is not on there. They would run into legal issues if they did IMHO.

All that info is on the face of the card.
