The Man in the High Castle
« on: December 28, 2016, 01:53:20 PM »
If you're not into The Man in the High Castle, get into it. That stuff will mess with your mind.

Season one may be a bit slow and boring at times, but it will be worth it to get to season two.
If you don't care why would you comment?

Season 1 was great. Season 2 is slow for me.

The amount of detail this show pushes out is amazing. I realize most of it is CGI but there isn't a detail I feel they've missed in terms of clothing, items on the wall, street signs, etc. I haven't started Season 2 yet but I definitely plan on it soon

Season 1 spoiler alert.

Backdrop: The world is dominated by two world powers: The Reich and the Japanese Empire. They have managed to get along since WWII but there are those extremists on the Nazi side (unlike the "moderate" Hitler) who want to provoke a war, so they can wipe out the Empire, so can finally have the perfect Master Race. There's also the resistance which operates both in NYC against the Nazis and in San Francisco against the Japanese.

Storyline: Everyone is after these mysterious films. Hitler collects them, but we don't really understand why. The Japanese are after them but they're not really sure why. The Man in the High Castle is involved with the resistance, and he's after the films as well, but then we also suspect that he somehow obtains/produces the films. We don't get to meet him in Season 1. Julianna Crain has seen one of the films and discovers that she's in them and is desperate to find out more. Joe Blake is a Nazi but we're sympathetic because it seems he was born that way and is going through a moral struggle. John Smith (ranking Nazi officer in NYC, who curiously seems to have been born and raised in the U.S. before the war) makes passing references to Joe's father, indicating that there's some importance there but we don't know why.

And then of course, there's the last ten seconds of Season 1 which I'm sure you haven't forgotten!

What's the consensus: worth starting the show or not?

It's a very "binge"y show and you'd knock it off pretty quickly. Then you'd have to wait a year for season 3. Its done very well though and really depicts an alternate history. I like it.

Not the best, but I'd say go for it.

The show is excellent, and I'd say season 2 is even better than 1.
It does depend heavily on you remembering season 1, so you should at least watch the season 1 recap (on the season 2 page) before starting.
The book (by Phillip K Dick) is also pretty good - it was free to read with Prime for a while. Interesting to see what they did with it for the show - the show is only loosely based on the book.

Its funny. the pilot episode was Amazon's most watched and well received pilot out of all their shows. Finally about a yr later they continued with production and release....just your fun fact for the day!
