I was thinking about this again. Ner mitzvah has 2 types of cotton wicks: regular (the red box in the link) and multi-ply (the green box in the link). I've used both extensively, and found a much better flame from the multi-ply. So it's hard to taina that you need davka the kind in the red box because it makes a better flame. I don't know whether tzemer gefen would halachically exclude multi-ply, but worse flame can't be the reason.

I make sure that the wick that goes into the tube doesn't stick out more than about an 1/8 - 3/16 of an inch. Less makes a tiny flame, more makes this shriveled up thingy in the flame.

I started burning the top of the wick first, and it helped a lot for the shriveled ash in the flame

I bought 2 rolls several years ago in a plumbing store near ytv. They pay a long time. It is the same exact wicks r Belsky ztzal used

Some people specifically put water on the bottom to symbolize klal yisroel floats on top and doesn't mix with the umos
