Trip Reports: @Yehuda's friend
Day Trip @bhys

Toronto:

The Jewish community is broken up in to three main areas
1. "Down South" which is in the area of Bathurst and Lawrence
2. Clanton Park which is a little further north around Bathurst and Sheppard
3. Thornhill which is even further north @ Clark and Bathurst

Downtown, without any traffic is 25 from down south, 30 minutes from clanton park and 35 minutes from Thornhill. Expect those numbers to almost double during rush hour.

Hotels

Park Hyatt Toronto
By no means a luxury hotel, but a good value for CC anniversary nights.
Located in mid-town, around a 20 minute drive (longer during evening rush hour) to the Jewish community @ Bathurst/Lawrence, a few minutes less than that to the restaurants on Eglinton.

Attractions

CN Tower
Toronto's iconic tower, was the tallest freestanding structure in the world from 1975-2007
Nice views, but only if it's a clear day. If it's overcast you'll be surrounded by clouds at the top and you won't be able to see too much.
At the top, there are indoor and outdoor observation decks and a glass floor.
Edgewalk at the CN Tower-
For ~$200 CDN you can walk out (harnessed) on a thin railing-less platform at 116 stories high.
Takes a few hours and is not cheap by any means, but could be cool.

Ripley's Aquarium
Downtown, right next to the CN Tower
288 Bremner Blvd Toronto, ON M5V 3L9
Excellent aquarium. Very expensive

Hockey Hall of Fame
Excellently done. Really cool to be able to touch the cup
Downtown, 30 Yonge St Toronto, ON M5E 1X8

Canada's Wonderland
Theme park (think six flags)
15 minutes north of Thornhill

Activities on the Way from NY:
  • Krispy Kreme in Scranton - on Moosic Street, under KOA with supervision from local Scranton Rav - R' Fine, recommended by Rabbi Eidlitz from KosherQuest.com via email to @Yehuda
  • Corning Museum of Glass ($20) - large museum of varying glass displays and creations, glass blowing demonstrations, has high reviews although @Yehuda didn't think it was that amazing
  • Watkins Glen State Park (free, $8 parking) - hike in a gorge along several waterfalls, more of an upward step climb than a hike which is quite strenuous, @Yehuda recommends going 20 minutes in to see the first few falls then turning back, if you go the whole 1-1.5 hours you can wait for a shuttle school bus to take you back to the parking lot for $5 cash
  • Letchworth State Park - hot air balloons
  • Finger Lakes - can go on a boat cruise or just find a nice place to pull over for a good lunch spot, @Yehuda took Hwy 14, which runs alongside Seneca Lake and found a grassy area with benches.
  • Strong Museum of Play in Rochester ($15) - not exactly on the most direct route, but a fantastic, huge museum of toys and games (many of which you can play) for all ages
  • Howe Caverns ($25) - boat ride in a cave, but close to Albany, so not on a great route to Toronto
  • Destiny USA https://www.destinyusa.com/directory/entertainment in Syracuse NY is great place to stop for various indoor fun activities...The mall has an escape room, indoor ropes course, virtual reality, mirror maze, lazer tag, trampoline park, mini golf, Dave & Busters, WonderWorks museum/entertainment center and more...I found the prices to be quite reasonable.

Spotted some police patrolling on horseback in the frum neighborhood on Erev YK.

They’ve been out in full force around the neighborhood for the past week or two, but this is the first time I’ve seen them in the area on horses.

What's the latest Mincha (up to 30 min past Shkia) anywhere between YYZ and the BAYT? Minor detours OK.

Assuming you take highways to the BAYT, you don't really go anywhere near any other frum part of town on the way from YYZ, so I think you probably just have to look at minyanim up there in Thornhill.

I don't know much about the shuls there. I just texted someone who lives up there. Will lyk when I hear back.

@Sam Finkelstein I heard back. Apparently there are no scheduled minyanim after shkiah in Thornhill. They're all ~10 min before shkiah. My guy said he's occasionally seen unscheduled minchas right around shkiah at Chabad, but nothing reliable.

If you're willing to take more of a detour further south, Bobov has a late mincha, probably 30-40 min aftter shkiah. That's 3703 Bathurst. Not sure if they have anything a bit earlier.

Thanks! So what’s the best neighborhood if tight on time from airport? I daven up to 30 minutes after….

Bobov is more on the way than anything else but might be after 30. Right in that neighborhood the only other options are Agudah, which is prob 10-15 min before shkiah, and Chevra Shas (3545 Bathurst), which should be at shkiah IIRC.

For anything in between shkiah and Bobov you'd have to head further south (more out of your way). Boat Shul probably has 5-10 min after shkiah. Not sure there's anything between that and Bobov.

Bobov is 40 minutes after Shekia I believe. Though, I should mention, they generally start late. To quote what someone told me there once, "That's when they start thinking about when to Daven".

Chevra Shas may be what you want. Not sure though.

But @Yehudaa , isn't there a list with Zmanim on a certain website? Though, I don't know how accurate it is.

Yes, there is FrumToronto but I don't know how often it's updated. Worth checking and then looking into that specific shul.

There is a PDF list that someone down south updates. Just checked it. It could be missing something, but I don't see anything on there between the boat shul 10 min after shkiah and bobov 40 min after.

Someone I know just posted a video tour of Olive Branch in Thornhill on his whatsapp status. Apparently they're opening tomorrow. Shelves are full of perishables, so it certainly looks like they're ready to go.

The store looks amazing in terms of design and selection. Definitely a real Lakewood/NY style grocery- not something Toronto has ever seen.

I don't live up there so I can't see myself shopping there much, but hoping it's successful for the people that live there.

What would be the advantage over Sobey's?

Maybe just another competitor. Dunno.

I've probably only been in Sobeys once or twice over the years as I live down south, but I assume some of Sobeys is not kosher, and that the selection is not as extensive as a large fully-kosher store, especially in terms of the specialty counters.

This place looks stunning too. I imagine they're trying to create a nicer experience. I'm not in the industry, but I assume there's something to creating a really nice store? That seems to be the way it's done elsewhere.

There might be other reasons too, but generally I can see someone choosing a really nice fully-kosher store that looks like any of the nicer stores in Lakewood, vs. shopping in a non-jewish store with a large kosher selection.

Cobey's Thornhill is kosher only including all bakery and takeout sections.

Thinking of doing an in-and-out for a wedding next month.

Wedding is called for 6pm at the BAYT. Need some suggestions on how to do this efficiently. Would either stay overnight with someone local, or at the airport.

  • What arrival time should I be booking?
  • Should I rent a car or Uber?

TIA!

Thanks everyone for your input. It worked out great.

Booked a 3:35 arrival. Initially reserved a Polestar but then midsize became significantly cheaper. Hertz lets you switch to a cheaper rental even if you prepay like I did.

On-time arrival to Terminal 1. Used the ArriveCAN app before arrival and breezed through customs and was at the rental pickup after a short walk. There was a fully-charged Tesla available in the aisle and I was able to take it with no issues.

There is now a Mincha in the Boat Shul 20 minutes after Shkia, which I went to. Traffic was terrible, though, and I wasn’t about to take my rental car onto the toll road.

For my 6:30 flight the following morning, I left the neighborhood at around 4:30 and got to the airport in about 20 minutes. No issues returning car with 82% or so charge. Global Entry was quick but long walk to the gate; still was there an hour before boarding.
