Trip Reports: @Yehuda's friend
Day Trip @bhys

Toronto:

The Jewish community is broken up in to three main areas
1. "Down South" which is in the area of Bathurst and Lawrence
2. Clanton Park which is a little further north around Bathurst and Sheppard

Downtown, without any traffic is 25 from down south, 30 minutes from clanton park and 35 minutes from Thornhill. Expect those numbers to almost double during rush hour.

Hotels

Park Hyatt Toronto
By no means a luxury hotel, but a good value for CC anniversary nights.
Located in mid-town, around a 20 minute drive (longer during evening rush hour) to the Jewish community @ Bathurst/Lawrence, a few minutes less than that to the restaurants on Eglinton.

Attractions

CN Tower
Toronto's iconic tower, was the tallest freestanding structure in the world from 1975-2007
Nice views, but only if it's a clear day. If it's overcast you'll be surrounded by clouds at the top and you won't be able to see too much.
At the top, there are indoor and outdoor observation decks and a glass floor.
Edgewalk at the CN Tower-
For ~$200 CDN you can walk out (harnessed) on a thin railing-less platform at 116 stories high.
Takes a few hours and is not cheap by any means, but could be cool.

Ripley's Aquarium
Downtown, right next to the CN Tower
288 Bremner Blvd Toronto, ON M5V 3L9
Excellent aquarium. Very expensive

Hockey Hall of Fame
Excellently done. Really cool to be able to touch the cup
Downtown, 30 Yonge St Toronto, ON M5E 1X8

Canada's Wonderland
Theme park (think six flags)
15 minutes north of Thornhill
https://www.canadaswonderland.com/
kosher food options at the park provided by Tov-Li which are available at the Backlot Café

ROM (Royal Ontario Museum
www.rom.on.ca/

Ontario science Centre
https://www.ontariosciencecentre.ca/

Centre Island and Centreville
Beautiful island a 5 minute ferry ride from downtown.
Plenty of grass and splash pads and a small amusement park for kids

25 minute drive from main areas. Very nice zoo. They have pandas on loan from China for the next few years

Woodbine (Fantasy fair)

Activities on the Way from NY:
  • Krispy Kreme in Scranton - on Moosic Street, under KOA with supervision from local Scranton Rav - R' Fine, recommended by Rabbi Eidlitz from KosherQuest.com via email to @Yehuda
  • Corning Museum of Glass ($20) - large museum of varying glass displays and creations, glass blowing demonstrations, has high reviews although @Yehuda didn't think it was that amazing
  • Watkins Glen State Park (free, $8 parking) - hike in a gorge along several waterfalls, more of an upward step climb than a hike which is quite strenuous, @Yehuda recommends going 20 minutes in to see the first few falls then turning back, if you go the whole 1-1.5 hours you can wait for a shuttle school bus to take you back to the parking lot for $5 cash
  • Letchworth State Park - hot air balloons
  • Finger Lakes - can go on a boat cruise or just find a nice place to pull over for a good lunch spot, @Yehuda took Hwy 14, which runs alongside Seneca Lake and found a grassy area with benches.
  • Strong Museum of Play in Rochester ($15) - not exactly on the most direct route, but a fantastic, huge museum of toys and games (many of which you can play) for all ages
  • Howe Caverns ($25) - boat ride in a cave, but close to Albany, so not on a great route to Toronto
  • Destiny USA https://www.destinyusa.com/directory/entertainment in Syracuse NY is great place to stop for various indoor fun activities...The mall has an escape room, indoor ropes course, virtual reality, mirror maze, lazer tag, trampoline park, mini golf, Dave & Busters, WonderWorks museum/entertainment center and more...I found the prices to be quite reasonable.

A great restaurant for dinner in Toronto is Meron. It is the best kosher restaurant in the city. It's fancy and small so reservations may be required. If you have access to a vehicle in Toronto there are a few other places worth checking out. Burgy's is a great hamburger joint. Golden Chopsticks (same plaza as burgy's) has great Chinese. Also there is Dr. laffa which is by far one of the best shwarma/Israeli restaurant you can find outside of Israel itself they have large portions, great quality food and really cheap. They bake their own laffa bread when you order and that alone is worth the drive there. They are located in the middle of nowhere though but it is is well worth the drive. Heck they are going to be featured on The Food Network Canada's show "You Gotta Eat Here." trust me you won't be disappointed.

Thanks for the post!!
Anyone been to the Park Hyatt for their kosher meal service yet?  Don't forget you'll earn 5-7x HGP points for the meal besides for 3ppd on the Hyatt card.  At 1.9cpp that's almost 20% off you bill :D

Thanks. Please update us every day as these restaurants will probably be closed soon and be replaced by someone else (or lose their hechsher). That's just how Toronto is ;)

Haha...yeah it's been pretty bad the last couple of years here but truthfully only 4 restaurants have actually closed over the past decade. 398 West (fancy place but food quality took a major hit), King Solomon's (that place was a nightmare in terms of ownership squabbles an food quality) Marky's (financial issues...it's margins didn't justify the cost of operation to the owner) and Moti's (closed a long time ago already because of the owners personal financial problems).

Most newer restaurants have lower overheads and as long as food quality remains and doesn't drop they should last into the forseeable future. Case in point is Dr. laffa who isn't even really located in the Jewish community but rather opted to open in an industrial neighborhood. Cheap rent equals lower prices. Plus Dr Laffa is very popular with the non-Kosher foodies in Toronto which is unheard of for a kosher restaurant here.

Plus Miami Grill (I liked this place, great steak sandwich) and Delicacies (Nice ambiance, bad food).
That makes at least 5 in the past year, not decade.

Just be happy you have people there dumb enough to keep opening new places!
It's a really tough business.

Yeah we do have some dumb people opening restaurants here.

In regards to Miami Grill, I can't really count that one in the closed column as the owner owns other restaurants that he preferred to focus on more, namely Oasis and Dairy Treats.

Don't remember Delicacies or Wasabi, but then again they couldn't have been open for too long and to me anything that didn't or doesn't have the potential to last more than 5 years is just a failed experiment not a restaurant :)

Huh? Then where can I get my steak sandwich :D

Delicacies was the most gorgeous looking worst tasting restaurant I'd ever been to.  I was there in 07/10 IIRC.

it also seems that self serve frozen yogurt places are opening up on every other corner. They are bound to go out of business soon also. And since Dr laffa opened and did well, another laffa place opened up. Can;t people get original?

Still trying to even remember where delicacies was and I am drawing a complete blank, I can't even remember it and I live in Toronto.

Yeah steak sandwiches are hard to come by in Toronto, Marky's IMHO had a great one that with raw onions on it and dipped in their homemade gravy was a great meal to be had.

It's funny that the frozen yogurt places was mentioned as most have been deemed non-Kosher according to COR. The only one that I've heard of that is of any value is Menchies.

Where is this other shwarma place? I always like trying new places, although Dr. Laffa is still the best. How can you beat a laffa packed with meat and as many toppings as you want all for $10. After one of those bad boys you'll be full for a good 8-10 hours, if not longer. There are other places in Toronto that would charge double that for less toppings.

There is also one in Sobeys Plaza. this along with the old Not Just yogurt, menchies, and a bunch of other places. No way for all of them to survive.

Yogen Fruz by Chabad gate is C"Y. The Place in the sobeys plaza is also. All other Yogen Fruz chains are not.
IMO Yogen Fruz is a waste, really nothing good and way too expensive. Like $10 for an average portion. It goes by weight.
