Trip Reports: @Yehuda's friend
Day Trip @bhys

Toronto:

The Jewish community is broken up in to three main areas
1. "Down South" which is in the area of Bathurst and Lawrence
2. Clanton Park which is a little further north around Bathurst and Sheppard
3. Thornhill which is even further north @ Clark and Bathurst

Downtown, without any traffic is 25 from down south, 30 minutes from clanton park and 35 minutes from Thornhill. Expect those numbers to almost double during rush hour.

Hotels

Park Hyatt Toronto
By no means a luxury hotel, but a good value for CC anniversary nights.
Located in mid-town, around a 20 minute drive (longer during evening rush hour) to the Jewish community @ Bathurst/Lawrence, a few minutes less than that to the restaurants on Eglinton.

Attractions

CN Tower
Toronto's iconic tower, was the tallest freestanding structure in the world from 1975-2007
Nice views, but only if it's a clear day. If it's overcast you'll be surrounded by clouds at the top and you won't be able to see too much.
At the top, there are indoor and outdoor observation decks and a glass floor.
Edgewalk at the CN Tower-
For ~$200 CDN you can walk out (harnessed) on a thin railing-less platform at 116 stories high.
Takes a few hours and is not cheap by any means, but could be cool.

Ripley's Aquarium
Downtown, right next to the CN Tower
288 Bremner Blvd Toronto, ON M5V 3L9
Excellent aquarium. Very expensive

Hockey Hall of Fame
Excellently done. Really cool to be able to touch the cup
Downtown, 30 Yonge St Toronto, ON M5E 1X8

Canada's Wonderland
Theme park (think six flags)
15 minutes north of Thornhill
https://www.canadaswonderland.com/
kosher food options at the park provided by Tov-Li which are available at the Backlot Café

ROM (Royal Ontario Museum
www.rom.on.ca/

Activities on the Way from NY:
  • Krispy Kreme in Scranton - on Moosic Street, under KOA with supervision from local Scranton Rav - R' Fine, recommended by Rabbi Eidlitz from KosherQuest.com via email to @Yehuda
  • Corning Museum of Glass ($20) - large museum of varying glass displays and creations, glass blowing demonstrations, has high reviews although @Yehuda didn't think it was that amazing
  • Watkins Glen State Park (free, $8 parking) - hike in a gorge along several waterfalls, more of an upward step climb than a hike which is quite strenuous, @Yehuda recommends going 20 minutes in to see the first few falls then turning back, if you go the whole 1-1.5 hours you can wait for a shuttle school bus to take you back to the parking lot for $5 cash
  • Letchworth State Park - hot air balloons
  • Finger Lakes - can go on a boat cruise or just find a nice place to pull over for a good lunch spot, @Yehuda took Hwy 14, which runs alongside Seneca Lake and found a grassy area with benches.
  • Strong Museum of Play in Rochester ($15) - not exactly on the most direct route, but a fantastic, huge museum of toys and games (many of which you can play) for all ages
  • Howe Caverns ($25) - boat ride in a cave, but close to Albany, so not on a great route to Toronto
  • Destiny USA https://www.destinyusa.com/directory/entertainment in Syracuse NY is great place to stop for various indoor fun activities...The mall has an escape room, indoor ropes course, virtual reality, mirror maze, lazer tag, trampoline park, mini golf, Dave & Busters, WonderWorks museum/entertainment center and more...I found the prices to be quite reasonable.

Yogen Fruz by Chabad gate is C"Y. The Place in the sobeys plaza is also. All other Yogen Fruz chains are not.
IMO Yogen Fruz is a waste, really nothing good and way too expensive. Like $10 for an average portion. It goes by weight.

Menchies is by far the best, but not CY.

Any chance we can get Dan for a Toronto DO?  Btw, I know that DO is a get together of some sort, but what does it stand for?

No good restaurants.
Everything is expensive, so unless your gonna be making a high income you won't have much money to spend on yourself.
There is no good community there. Each one has their crazy politics.
The COR controlling is in itself a reason not to go, if you're makpid on kosher.
The divorce rate in the frum community is outrageous.

Why move before having jobs?

because we want to move there (my wife is from there) and the responses we have been getting from places we have applied is that they dont look at people who dont live there. they have plenty of people applying who live there. so at some point, we just have to go and hope for the best. we have enough savings saved up (ideally for a house) to live on, and we could live at her parents for a little if we need to....

G/L!
When do you move?

ideally want to move before Pesach. so if my wife doesn't get  a job there before that (I cant legally work there yet), we will probably move around Pesach time. at least if we want to take a vacation somewhere, if we both don't have jobs, the vacation will be free, thanks to DDF!!!

Food report please?
i went on the first day they were open after sukkos and they didnt have a full menu (most notably no duck on the menu)
the menu changes every few weeks so no guarantees theyll have what i had

we ordered the bone marrow appetizer which was amazing. the basically sliced a huge bone lengthwise and roasted it with a wonderful crust (eaten with toasted bread)
we also had the tongue and salami tostada with poached egg which was muy delicioso as well

i recall being stuffed at that point and regretting ordering our steaks which we couldnt fully appreciate

i think we got a dessert but i forget what it was...

all in all, a wonderful meal

I haven't had anything there that wasn't good. The chef is unbelievable and was trained at a top culinary school in France. He changes his menu often based on quality and availability ensuring the best quality meals. One of the best things he has often on the menu is beer-battered sweetbreads which are amazing (assuming you like sweetbreads of course).

Be very careful and don't make assumptions. Just the mere fact of living in Toronto will not help you get any job. Ensure that you get proper sponsorship or permanent residence status first (Canadian version of US Green Card), otherwise you cannot legally work in Canada. Also, the economy here is very deceptive, while it appears better than the US on paper, the job market is pretty crappy in Toronto, most of the jobs being created in Canada are out west (Alberta and Saskatchewan).

In regards of things being expensive, it's all relative, what's expensive to one is not for another. Yes, housing costs are higher within the Jewish community but that is no different than in any other city. In terms of buying things in general, yes things are a bit more expensive in Canada but all-in-all if you can manage you expenses properly you'll find that it is not that much more than most major cities in the US.

In terms of communities and their politics it's no different than any other major city with a decent-large Jewish population. There is a community for every type of hashkafa and age group in the city and it's all just a matter of which one fits you best and how much you are willing to spend on living accommodations (rent vs. ownership and costs associated with both)

And I'm not quite sure what JEWDA is talking about there being a high divorce rate in the Jewish community, I don't think it's any different on a per capita level than any other city.
