Sim Card Hacking
« on: May 07, 2011, 03:24:08 PM »
Is there anyway to hack a sim card to use voice service from one provider, and data from a second?

You might be able to hack the card, but it won't help for several reasons.

Whether using data or call functionality, the "antennas" of the cell companies (which could sometimes be a shutfus from several providers) need to ID you, and get approval, ie, is your card member of the network, is the card line active (or. suspended for not paying a bill) or active balance for prepay, and in roaming, whether the original operator allows this line to work (or not, eg blocked for roaming).

Every sim card has a phone number eg 972 540 235623, but also a sim serial, which looks like 806523652146/963, and is just like the phone number unique.

When activating a new number by an operator, they know that this sim belongs to them, and gets activated, however, if the number isn't one of them, it is requested via a central point, who in return check with the operator where the number is currently held, and they decide whether to release or not (this part is strictly governed by law).
They release it to the central point, who then in turn hands it over to the operator.

This means that a certain sim number can only be active by one operator at the time.

If you copy the sim phone number and serial of someone else, you can speak on his account.
The last one turning on his phone, will get the network to himself (very few operators allow more then one working at the time; you could test it by activating a dual sim).
Data might work for both simultaneously.

Please do.

I know that some little tweaks require the sim to be extracted from the 'rectangular plastic with cut corner' in order to be put in another sim-sized box, so that you can have multiple sims in one phone.
As far as I know they won't work simultaneously, but rather, with an added menu on the phone you can switch from sim to sim.

Someone just asked me whether I want to market the following (don't know if interested, but I could get hold of it, if people want):

A little chip that you stick on the sim card, and if the sim-slot on the phone is very tight, where the sims corners is cut, just cut a little more, and its ready to work.(You could use it on different simcards, meaning, its not attached to a simcard)
The idea is that people who use calling card to call abroad or similar paid services, no longer need to do so manually introduce the number or update the whole address book, but rather set it up (via the newly added menu) to convert let's say every number starting with 011 or + to dial a certain number prior and if needed wait and/or type a pin. More then one calling card can be attributed, and so on.
If you are say in israel, you can tell him to ignore numbers starting with +972 etc.
