I find it hard to believe that so few DDFers seem to recognize the photo.
It is an iconic photo, taking seconds before American Flight 191 crashed after takeoff in Chicago, which was America's worst aviation accident in history (besides 9/11 obviously). An engine ripped off the DC-10 upon takeoff and hydraulic fluid leaked out - in the photo you see that an engine is missing and a mist is seen coming from the wing. Although the plane normally could've been able to lift off missing an engine, that breakoff and hydraulic failure caused the the slats to retract on that wing, which caused the wing to stall. The loss of the engine also disabled the stall warning system, so the pilot was unaware of the stall. The plane rolled and crashed into an airport hanger, killing all 271 passengers and 2 on the ground.
And yes, I thought DDFers would know that. For those who are not aviation buffs, you should've seen this in the Zman a few years back IIRC.
