Topic Wiki

Best offer available right now is $50 for internet & phone for 6 months, afterwards bumped up to $60/month.
Standalone internet service isn't cheaper. You can try calling retention to extend your promotional rate, though recently DDFers have been unsuccessful.

The best available promo for Optimum internet (only), is the $40/month for 12 months for new customers.
Many people reported success in retaining the $40/month plan (after 12 months) after calling Optimum to cancel.

The old promo for internet was $30, but that has been replaced with the $40 plan around May 2013.
As of now, it isn't coming back, even with persistent HUCA, but users have had success upgrading to a higher speed plan for $45/month

When I moved, I didn't have a choice and they made a new account for me, so I got the new customer discount again.
I wonder what people who type "u" instead of "you" do with all their free time.

In my experience if you move they consider that as a sort of new account/customer in regards to their promotions. So I don't think it makes a difference. (Btw you should look into buying your own modem and not paying rental fees every month)

Optimum 100 is $39.99.
Optimum 20 is $29.99 (although often on sale, call / chat to see if anything current).

Get your own modem, it will be cheaper (within 1 year) than paying $5-$10 monthly rent.

They wouldn't even let me keep my online account, I had to create a new account with a new username.

No, Google Wifi is a router.

The modem is your bridge to Optimum. The router (plugged into the modem) is what your devices connect to. Nowadays you can get a modem+router combo device.

Some modem options:
I got this.

Any docsis 3.0 modem should work fine up to 100 mbps. If you want Optimum voice, then make sure it has a jack for telephony. If you're on a faster plan, then get a docsis 3.1 modem.
I got this one:

1. DROPR. I was told that I can only use an optimum-approved modem to get rid of the modem charge. This is not true. Any docsis 3.0 modem should work fine. Just connect your modem and send theirs back.

2. Here's the link to get a shipping label for the modem: https://www.optimum.net/pages/equipmentShippingInstructions.html

3. If you have phone also, not only internet, make sure you get a modem that also does phone.

AFAIK, modems are not simply 'plug and play' you need to call Optimum to provision it. Not disagreeing with anything you posted, just pointing out that setting up the modem is more involved than "Just connect your modem and send theirs back."

I'm paying $39.99 for 100 Mbps on a promo. I bought the modem so no fees there. Pretty good deal IMO. Plus, my neighbor pays $20/mo for using it so that makes it even better.

-1/2

IME when you plug it in and try to connect to the internet you should get an installation screen where you could do it yourself, no need to call.

Apparently I was not aware that Optimum started charging for modem even for grandfathered plans (my parents). I also see they added a $6.99 "Service Protection" charge to the bill anyone know what that is about?

Regarding the modem fee on grandfathered plans:
