Below is a link to a list of modems that are compatible with Optimum. Depending on the speed you have you will need to get a modem that can accommodate that speed.
A modem has channels that represent the speed it can handle. It's displayed as download channels x upload channels, so a 16x8 modem means it has 16 download channels and 8 upload channels.

It's not recommended to get anything lower than 16X8 since speeds are only going up in the future.
Chart showing the channels needed to support the Optimum speed

  • Optimum 100, 8x4 or higher
  • Optimum 200, 16x8 or higher
  • Optimum 400, 24x8 or higher

There are many modems available on Craigslist's and eBay as well, there is no need to buy a new one as long as it's compatible.
https://pickmymodem.com/approved-modems-for-optimum-cablevision-internet-service/

Once you have the modem you can call Optimum tech support and ask them to provision a new modem and give them the MAC id located a the modem. They will also send you a prepaid FedEx label to return their modem and the price will be reflected on your next bill. You just saved $10 - $10.89 a month in fees.

I bought ARRIS SurfBoard SB6121 DOCSIS 3.0 Cable Modem over 5 years ago. I used it for Time Warner and later brought it to another neighborhood and used it for Optimum.
Thanks, after spending a ridiculous amount of time on the phone with optimum, they recommend I get one of the TM series Arris modems...

Who do you currently have? Internet prices are not set in stone, you can actually haggle with them. A friend of mine had the 2 year sign up special with optimum, when the 2 years where up they wanted to raise it to a ridiculous amount. He argued and threatened to change providers until the gave him the special for another few years.

Also sometimes adding tv or phone will make it cheaper then internet alone.
I'm not who you think I am.

Total wack jobs i must say, they were charging my parents $120 for phone and internet for a few months, they haven't been on top of the bill, so didn't see this charge or pay attention that its 120$, i had them remove the phone service for which was never used, while they use connectel for a phone service which they're also getting ripped off in my opinion while paying $50-$60 for that service per month which gets them the basics USA/CAD and 2-3 cents a minute elsewhere in the world.
They had 100mb so had them(or they offered to) upgrade that to 400mb(Which is not needed, while 200mb would be enough.)

Wonder if i switch to Verizon fios for 3 months and go back to optimum will that allow me to get the intro pricing for the next 1-2 years?
Or maybe just switch to Verizon? Or tell them i want to close my service/account?
Will try this week when i have a few minutes on my hands and see what happens.

I personally don't have cable anymore for a while now but should I get cable again I would buy the modem directly from them or Arris and not pay for years a $10 monthly fee.
Will call them and see what they want for me to buy it off them or for me to purchase one on ebay/amazon.
I'm not sure whats the benefit by me paying $10 a month vs me buying it outright? meaning why would someone pay the $10 a month?

If it breaks while you're renting it, they will get you a replacement. If you own it, you have to do a warranty claim if it is still under warranty or buy another if it's not.

Just buy one for $30-$40 on eBay.

I used to buy my own. They never worked as well as the leased ones and had to be replaced frequently. $10 a month is worth it for peace of mind.

This sounds like the kind of fear-mongering an Optimum rep would tell someone on the phone to try convincing them not to buy their own. I strongly disagree.
I bought my modem on 1/18/16 for $55 on eBay and it still works perfectly fine with 100/mbps. Had I been paying $10 a month, I would have been out $490. That's a $435 savings. Even if I had to replace it multiple times, I would still come out ahead.
