Topic Wiki

Below is a link to a list of modems that are compatible with Optimum. Depending on the speed you have you will need to get a modem that can accommodate that speed.
A modem has channels that represent the speed it can handle. It's displayed as download channels x upload channels, so a 16x8 modem means it has 16 download channels and 8 upload channels.

It's not recommended to get anything lower than 16X8 since speeds are only going up in the future.
Chart showing the channels needed to support the Optimum speed

  • Optimum 100, 8x4 or higher
  • Optimum 200, 16x8 or higher
  • Optimum 400, 24x8 or higher

There are many modems available on Craigslist's and eBay as well, there is no need to buy a new one as long as it's compatible.
https://pickmymodem.com/approved-modems-for-optimum-cablevision-internet-service/

Once you have the modem you can call Optimum tech support and ask them to provision a new modem and give them the MAC id located a the modem. They will also send you a prepaid FedEx label to return their modem and the price will be reflected on your next bill. You just saved $10 - $10.89 a month in fees.

Neighbor got a mailing saying 24.99 for cheapest internet. no details in the fine print as to what speed. I called and asked what speed. high pressure salesman said 20mb/s. I hung up on him, called retentions and said i want to go up from optimum 10 to optimum 20 for the same $24.99 i am paying. the retention agent claimed that it doesn't exist and the salesman misinformed me. he says 24.99 is only optimum 10, and optimum 20 is gone...there's supposedly nothing between optimum 10 and 300. and for 300 i'd have to go up to 39.99/monthly. should i HUCA?

I’m talking about an extender. Isn’t that something else ? I have a modem and a router already but it’s not strong enough for my house.

What upload speed do you get with residential Optimum 1 Gig service? I saw language a couple of days ago on their website that it could be up to about 940 mbps, but today I can't find such language anymore.

Someone who just ordered it is getting upload speeds of 35 to 50 Mbps.

Well they offer their smart router free if you lease the modem in an effort to provide free optimum hotspots around the world.
But in my opinion it's silly if you live In a residential area, I'm not giving away free hotspot and then have people sit and park outside my home playing on the internet.

just call the regular optimum number and say you are calling to cancel service. that will send you to retentions.
dunno about verizon, no Fios in my neighborhood.
optimum does not provide extenders, to the best of my knowledge. you can usually find something decent in the amazon warehouse deals. look for ac750 or ac1200 in good condition for around $15-20

Just noticed on my bill that we getting charged $10 a month for Optimum 200.
Is this something we need?
If not, can we just cancel it and lower our bill by $10?
Thanks.

Theres a base price at 100mb and then $10 additional for each 100mb, so 200 would be 10$ and 300 would be $20 and so forth..

Well I have 400mb plan and right now, and I'm only getting speeds of 30mbs.
Called to have a tech come, but was rejected by my family members during COVID19, point being there's many devices and computers being used and we have ok speed, definitely not amazing but good, great speed.
Not to mention we all have unlimited from T-Mobile now, so it's hard to say, most don't need the WiFi.

But yes me myself I would downgrade to the 200 megabyte plan, I'm getting ripped off paying 90 bucks a month.
I saw plans for a lifetime of 300 megabytes or was it 200 megabytes for $50-$60.
Will have to make the phone call to optimum to haggle with them or maybe disconnect my service for 30 days and re-sign up.
Either I would go with a different company in the interim or use my phone which has unlimited data as a hotspot.

It's crazy how new customers that sign up can get a much better plan for lifetime while customer that's been with them for 10 years is getting ripped off!

Here in Brooklyn they aren't offering any plans now less then 300mb. They have one plan for $15 I think and you need to be a senior in ssi or have a child in public school and/or some other gov benefit to qualify for the plan which is at 30mb yup that's thirty MB.
It's worth too much.
