Topic Wiki

Below is a link to a list of modems that are compatible with Optimum. Depending on the speed you have you will need to get a modem that can accommodate that speed.
A modem has channels that represent the speed it can handle. It's displayed as download channels x upload channels, so a 16x8 modem means it has 16 download channels and 8 upload channels.

It's not recommended to get anything lower than 16X8 since speeds are only going up in the future.
Chart showing the channels needed to support the Optimum speed

  • Optimum 100, 8x4 or higher
  • Optimum 200, 16x8 or higher
  • Optimum 400, 24x8 or higher

There are many modems available on Craigslist's and eBay as well, there is no need to buy a new one as long as it's compatible.
https://pickmymodem.com/approved-modems-for-optimum-cablevision-internet-service/

Once you have the modem you can call Optimum tech support and ask them to provision a new modem and give them the MAC id located a the modem. They will also send you a prepaid FedEx label to return their modem and the price will be reflected on your next bill. You just saved $10 - $10.89 a month in fees.

Yes, Optimum tech told me that any modem DOCSIS 3.0 should work.

[She said they specifically recommend using Arris, Netgear or D-Link.

[ I got Arris SB6190 Surfboard for the speed and modem chanels and it's working fine.]

Then when you're comparing DOCSIS 3.0 modems, be sure they support phone service.

unless you get a modem that has a router built into it, yes you're going to need to buy a router, if you want wifi
FTFY

I know people who specifically don't have a router, because they don't want their children to access their internet, or to even know that their is internet access]. Rather they plug their computers into the modem with an Ethernet cable, which puts internet directly from the modem to their computers, and they don't have wifi access in their home.

Another idea is to hide the name. Meaning you can hide the wifi name, while you have to enter the name to connect, but when searching it's not visible.
I've seen such like this before.

Indeed!

However...

I had a rosh yeshiva once who told us that a bais medrash, by default, has no cellphone waves inside. As long as no bochur brings their phone to the bais medrash, Hashem keeps the waves out, so it remains an unblemished makom kadosh. However, if someone brings their phone in, Hashem does not want to do an open miracle and make there be no service, so he lets the waves go in.

With that reasoning...

Well that all depends why you don't want internet in your home, or you have internet but don't want your kids to know about it..

But yes I agree with the R"Y. Just curious what Yeshiva was that?

ARRIS Touchstone TM822G DOCSIS 3.0 8x4 Telephony Modem Black
I wouldn't recommend this modem since 8x4 is on the low side. It won't give you full speed on Optimum 200 or higher. Stick to 16x8 or higher depending on your Optimum tier.
I bought the ARRIS SB6183 (Internet only) for $25 on craigslist. Works well with Optimum 200.

It seems like the used one is a decent price for a modem and router built into one.

We got it simply because it was an exact copy of the one we had from Optimum and didn't know what else to get.

I actually set my own up without having to call them, was real simple, disconnected my old one.. put in my new one and went on to the optimums website and synced it automatically.

And as far as returning my old one, i have two off my old modems sitting around in my home, I'm waiting till I get a return label to ship them back because I don't plan on going down to the store.
Thanks.
How long was your phone/internet service down during the process?

I would stay away from combination modem/router units because they are usually mediocre at both. Also, considering its 16x8 channels that may be too little in a few years, so you would need to replace the unit instead of just replacing the modem. Best to keep the modem and router separate and it also comes out cheaper. It's like whole life insurance, you end up with a mediocre product that is more expensive.
/end rant.

Let’s ask the local subject matter expert on this, @ExGingi
, I’m sure he’ll disagree about the mediocrity of WL (granted he’s biased).

As with anything else, it depends on the circumstances. For some people WL is the ideal product, for other people something else is better.

Have Optimum 300 and get constantly around 200 Mbps using wifi with a mesh system which is normal for optimum as they never give you the real Mbps
