Below is a link to a list of modems that are compatible with Optimum. Depending on the speed you have you will need to get a modem that can accommodate that speed.
A modem has channels that represent the speed it can handle. It's displayed as download channels x upload channels, so a 16x8 modem means it has 16 download channels and 8 upload channels.

It's not recommended to get anything lower than 16X8 since speeds are only going up in the future.
Chart showing the channels needed to support the Optimum speed

  • Optimum 100, 8x4 or higher
  • Optimum 200, 16x8 or higher
  • Optimum 400, 24x8 or higher

There are many modems available on Craigslist's and eBay as well, there is no need to buy a new one as long as it's compatible.
https://pickmymodem.com/approved-modems-for-optimum-cablevision-internet-service/

Once you have the modem you can call Optimum tech support and ask them to provision a new modem and give them the MAC id located a the modem. They will also send you a prepaid FedEx label to return their modem and the price will be reflected on your next bill. You just saved $10 - $10.89 a month in fees.

I haven't. I called countless times and there's no one to talk to. Consider filling a complaint with the FCC.

I suspect, from limited anecdotal experiences, (mine, as well as the 2 mentioned here; @yeshivabucher and @pointer) that, while the advertising explicitly applies to all 300mbps plans, in practice it is automated for the 300 fiber plan, but where fiber is unavailable, and they give you the 300 cable plan, it isn't automated.
and then the CS reps, who aren't empowered to do anything, make up all kinds of stories to make it go away...

Filled a complaint with the FCC yesterday. I received a call today AM from someone at Optimum who speaks a proper English, Imagine that! Let’s see how this plays itself out.

Settlement for the "Network Enhancement Fee"

There doesn’t seem to be a way to participate without having received a postcard with a claimID/confirmation code

I remember getting two emails about this with a claim ID.

My only question is that they are still charging this network enhancement fee and even increased by another $1 recently.

Once it’s settled and they disclose it (or whatever they should have been doing) it becomes kosher. How business gets done.

Sung to the tune of "Mr. Ga'avah":

"Optimum" only in name
They like to bait and switch
They got the last hurrah
When I fell into a ditch

In all seriousness, I don't have the time to make a whole song about my experience. Let's just say I'm a very disgruntled customer with Optimum. Of course, they started out with a somewhat reasonable price and then kept raising the price ridiculously. I had many bad experiences when I would try to cancel, and they would just switch me from one department to the next and not let me cancel. When I finally managed to cancel, I had to bring the equipment back to their office. Their office was conveniently located next to a big ditch, and it was pitch black outside, so my car sustained major damage.

I have since switched to Verizon and now I am gruntled.
