Below is a link to a list of modems that are compatible with Optimum. Depending on the speed you have you will need to get a modem that can accommodate that speed.
A modem has channels that represent the speed it can handle. It's displayed as download channels x upload channels, so a 16x8 modem means it has 16 download channels and 8 upload channels.

It's not recommended to get anything lower than 16X8 since speeds are only going up in the future.
Chart showing the channels needed to support the Optimum speed

  • Optimum 100, 8x4 or higher
  • Optimum 200, 16x8 or higher
  • Optimum 400, 24x8 or higher

There are many modems available on Craigslist's and eBay as well, there is no need to buy a new one as long as it's compatible.

Once you have the modem you can call Optimum tech support and ask them to provision a new modem and give them the MAC id located a the modem. They will also send you a prepaid FedEx label to return their modem and the price will be reflected on your next bill. You just saved $10 - $10.89 a month in fees.

I chatted with them online and they told me they have a $29.95 plan for 5/1 mbps.

How slow is 5/1 mbps ?
if you get the full 5 down it would be about .6 megabytes per second which if the math in my head is correct you get about 2GB an hr
I wonder what people who type "u" instead of "you" do with all their free time.

My promotional period just ended and my bill went up to 59.99. I just called them and told them I wanted to switch to Verizon so they offered to bring it back to 39.99

I showed Optimum Retention the number Verizon offered.
They gave me $39.99 for ULTRA50 for anothre year.
And they reimbursed me for the past two months of $59.99
although that took a transfer to CS and then a Supervisor who can overide.
how/where did verizon make that offer to you?

Will I get a WiFi router when I sign up or a modem or we need to pay for that?

You will get a free router, and they'll give you a modem but charge $5 per month.

I bought that one on eBay for around $65. At first it had issues that the connection would drop every few hours for like 20 seconds, but now it seems smooth. I'm only getting around 3mbps down, though.

They give you a wireless router for free because they want you to use it because it doubles over as an optimum hotspot
I wonder what people who type "u" instead of "you" do with all their free time.

If I get my own router then it won't be a hotspot ?

They gave me a regular netgear router 2-3 years ago. They added something into it to make it a hotspot ?

It's a custom model.

Netgear made it special for optimum ?  If someone uses my hotspot would they be on my IP ?

I don't know about that, but it obviously has custom firmware, since you can't disable it.

I should probably return it & get my own. Wouldn't want this happening.

absolutly not your router is doing 2 things one is being your router and a second unconnected task is being an optimum hotspot
