Below is a link to a list of modems that are compatible with Optimum. Depending on the speed you have you will need to get a modem that can accommodate that speed.
A modem has channels that represent the speed it can handle. It's displayed as download channels x upload channels, so a 16x8 modem means it has 16 download channels and 8 upload channels.

It's not recommended to get anything lower than 16X8 since speeds are only going up in the future.
Chart showing the channels needed to support the Optimum speed

  • Optimum 100, 8x4 or higher
  • Optimum 200, 16x8 or higher
  • Optimum 400, 24x8 or higher

There are many modems available on Craigslist's and eBay as well, there is no need to buy a new one as long as it's compatible.
https://pickmymodem.com/approved-modems-for-optimum-cablevision-internet-service/

Once you have the modem you can call Optimum tech support and ask them to provision a new modem and give them the MAC id located a the modem. They will also send you a prepaid FedEx label to return their modem and the price will be reflected on your next bill. You just saved $10 - $10.89 a month in fees.

It can't be worse than optimum but it's not available in all of lakewood
I wonder what people who type "u" instead of "you" do with all their free time.

Just hooked my Obi100 with google voice and cancelled my phone service with Optimum. My bill for phone and internet was $101 and now it will go down to $60 for internet only as per my discussion with Optimum yesterday. Is this the normal price for internet only? Has anyone gotten a good deal on internet lately? I'd like to get the cost down as low as I can.

That is the standard price for old customers. For new customers there is an introductory rate of $40. What you can do is cancel and sign up again under your wife's name, and when the tech come to your house just tell him that everything is already connected.

I called and threatened to switch to FiOS and the rep gave me the promotional price Verizon was offering at the time.

Great! Thank you! Did you do that with a regular rep or you were first transferred to the retention department?

About a month ago I called and asked for the retention department and was able to get my $60 internet-only bill down to $40. It took some bargaining and telling them about the offer I had from Verizon.

$75 for internet plus phone through retention.  No mention of Verizon needed.

Why in the heck do I need to call optimum to upgrade my speed? I understand to cancel you need to call, so they can send you to retention, but they should make it as easy as possible for me to give them more money!

Looks like optimum is rolling out a new basic 5Mbps plan for some areas. Just came in the mail today.

"Up to 5mbps" sounds quite slow IMHO.

That's probably the point, an option to pay less for slower internet.

5mbs is enough for email and light browsing.

They always say "up to", the speeds are not guaranteed.

That being said, I'm not arguing that 5Mbps is on the slow end, just for some people it's not a big deal.
