Below is a link to a list of modems that are compatible with Optimum. Depending on the speed you have you will need to get a modem that can accommodate that speed.
A modem has channels that represent the speed it can handle. It's displayed as download channels x upload channels, so a 16x8 modem means it has 16 download channels and 8 upload channels.

It's not recommended to get anything lower than 16X8 since speeds are only going up in the future.
Chart showing the channels needed to support the Optimum speed

  • Optimum 100, 8x4 or higher
  • Optimum 200, 16x8 or higher
  • Optimum 400, 24x8 or higher

There are many modems available on Craigslist's and eBay as well, there is no need to buy a new one as long as it's compatible.

Once you have the modem you can call Optimum tech support and ask them to provision a new modem and give them the MAC id located a the modem. They will also send you a prepaid FedEx label to return their modem and the price will be reflected on your next bill. You just saved $10 - $10.89 a month in fees.

Perhaps you avoid the modem fee if you buy a cheap one?
Those speeds are adequate for most people.

So I've been using my neighbors optimum hotspot, but every couple of days my laptop gets "blocked" and can't connect. I verified that the Mac address is getting blocked by using a Mac spoofer to log on. (Seems that if you're logged on continuously for x amount of time you're Mac gets blocked for a while)

Question is whether it is risky to keep logging in with a different Mac address and will they ban the whole account?

Whose account are you using to log on
I wonder what people who type "u" instead of "you" do with all their free time.

Don't you ever shut down your laptop?

Nope.. I used to need it on to log in remotely but don't anymore. But a pain to restrt every time I need something.

If I change the settings to just log off automatically, will that log off the WiFi also?

No
ETA: maybe restart when you finish with it so by the time you need it  it will have restarted it will also keep your computer running better

I signed up for optimum phone+internet in lakewood, nj in august 2013. got $60 a month for first year, and then went up to $85. I called tons of times since and just recently lowered me to $75.

Any tips/ideas of what I can say to lower my bill. They always tell me I'm on best possible promo for my account. They said only new customers can get the new customer promo thats been talked about here.

I'd appreciate any helpful input!

Is there a particular reason that you don't want to buy an Obi and pay a 1 time $40 purchase to Amazon and then $40 a month to Optimum with free phone??

If I am an existing customer, they will give me the $40 per month rate for just internet? I thought that was only a new customer promo

Has your wife ever had Optimum before?  :)

If you have phone with them that's a hassle but once you have Google Voice/Obi, you own your phone number and can have your wife start a new account with them.
