Below is a link to a list of modems that are compatible with Optimum. Depending on the speed you have you will need to get a modem that can accommodate that speed.
A modem has channels that represent the speed it can handle. It's displayed as download channels x upload channels, so a 16x8 modem means it has 16 download channels and 8 upload channels.

It's not recommended to get anything lower than 16X8 since speeds are only going up in the future.
Chart showing the channels needed to support the Optimum speed

  • Optimum 100, 8x4 or higher
  • Optimum 200, 16x8 or higher
  • Optimum 400, 24x8 or higher

There are many modems available on Craigslist's and eBay as well, there is no need to buy a new one as long as it's compatible.

Once you have the modem you can call Optimum tech support and ask them to provision a new modem and give them the MAC id located a the modem. They will also send you a prepaid FedEx label to return their modem and the price will be reflected on your next bill. You just saved $10 - $10.89 a month in fees.

I got it when I threatened to switch to Verizon.
Do you know how much Verizon offers?

Pretty good stuff though it should probably be in the Recon thread.
Lemme know when biz recon falls for that :)

Not AFAIK. Which of course proves that it's all a scam in the first place...

it's all the same they just throttle the speeds
I wonder what people who type "u" instead of "you" do with all their free time.

IINM they provide gigabit hardware but even if not it can definitely handle 100mbps however the cable on the street can't handle everyone at those speeds so they need to throttle it

Is that it, or they just want to charge you extra for faster?

Probably both but the fact is the more bandwith used the more upgrades are necessary coating them more money.

The faster the network speeds the more its used for example when you have slower speeds you stream at a lower resolution so it doesn't stop in the middle using less band with which is why they try to throttle YouTube and Netflix

I wonder what people who type "u" instead of "you" do with all their free time.

DISCLAIMER: I am not here to defend optimum. I'm just putting down the facts. If they are required to upgrade the lines because its too slow they will do everything in their power to push it off and ignore you but the facts are it does cost them money
