Topic Wiki

Below is a link to a list of modems that are compatible with Optimum. Depending on the speed you have you will need to get a modem that can accommodate that speed.
A modem has channels that represent the speed it can handle. It's displayed as download channels x upload channels, so a 16x8 modem means it has 16 download channels and 8 upload channels.

It's not recommended to get anything lower than 16X8 since speeds are only going up in the future.
Chart showing the channels needed to support the Optimum speed

  • Optimum 100, 8x4 or higher
  • Optimum 200, 16x8 or higher
  • Optimum 400, 24x8 or higher

There are many modems available on Craigslist's and eBay as well, there is no need to buy a new one as long as it's compatible.
https://pickmymodem.com/approved-modems-for-optimum-cablevision-internet-service/

Once you have the modem you can call Optimum tech support and ask them to provision a new modem and give them the MAC id located a the modem. They will also send you a prepaid FedEx label to return their modem and the price will be reflected on your next bill. You just saved $10 - $10.89 a month in fees.

Now I'm confused. According to the sales rep when I ordered the feature there was no monthly reoccurring rate fee, and there were no payphone issues. Now when I dug further online I found this, which says a different story

kids will be on the phone all day and be even more home sick

So figure out a way to limit it.

Phone systems these days are cheap, and can be programmed to do all kinds of cool things.

Heck, the camp could sell phone cards and make money.

Hey, do collect calls still exist? I remember screaming in the phone number that my parents should know where to call me back! It is crazy that to call you need to spend 50 cents each time, and even when you call back they nag you after a few minutes to put in more coins! So what is the way around it?

+1. I know of a camp where if its your first year there you cant call home for the first two weeks at all. Nor can you get "email" (where instead of getting letters your parents send thhe camp an email and they print it out for you).
I'm not who you think I am.

You can't make calls or text or use data without wifi. If you're looking for something similar (wifi call and text), but much better (doesn't REQUIRE Wifi to use it, just prefers wifi over cellular), check out republic wireless.

Position the router better or buy a repeater in a different part of the house

Can anyone verify what the speed of $25/month deal is?

Are there any installation charges?

Depends what you need it for, and you can always use the optimum WiFi for speeds up to 15mbps.
