Topic Wiki

Below is a link to a list of modems that are compatible with Optimum. Depending on the speed you have you will need to get a modem that can accommodate that speed.
A modem has channels that represent the speed it can handle. It's displayed as download channels x upload channels, so a 16x8 modem means it has 16 download channels and 8 upload channels.

It's not recommended to get anything lower than 16X8 since speeds are only going up in the future.
Chart showing the channels needed to support the Optimum speed

  • Optimum 100, 8x4 or higher
  • Optimum 200, 16x8 or higher
  • Optimum 400, 24x8 or higher

There are many modems available on Craigslist's and eBay as well, there is no need to buy a new one as long as it's compatible.
https://pickmymodem.com/approved-modems-for-optimum-cablevision-internet-service/

Once you have the modem you can call Optimum tech support and ask them to provision a new modem and give them the MAC id located a the modem. They will also send you a prepaid FedEx label to return their modem and the price will be reflected on your next bill. You just saved $10 - $10.89 a month in fees.

Follow-up: I called retention yesterday. The guy said there are no promotions and the best he can offer me is $59.95. I asked about canceling service, and he told me that if I try to cancel and then reconnect OR have another relative reconnect, they will do some public data records search, and anybody who lived at my house while I had it will NOT get the new customer promo.

I was about to give up hope, when he then told me that if I want to decrease my speed from 50/25 to 5/1, I could have it for $29.95. I was discussing with him how that would practically impact my ability to email, web browse, etc., and he then said he'd hate to see me do it and offered me a $10 credit for the next 3 months (so I'm still paying the $49.95 I had until now). He said there may be new promos out during that time.

Anyone else have any better luck recently getting a better offer from retention? If not, does anybody know anything about the 5/1 service and if it's worth it to save $ (I couldn't even find the plan mentioned online)? Or is there any other reasonable alternative ISP in Brooklyn?

What's stopping you from making up a name?
I don't believe they require a SSN (though they do ask for one).

I'm thinking of switching from verizon to optimum... any chance that optimum will pay my $50 contract termination fee? (I've heard of cell phone providers doing this; that's why I'm asking)

Thanks!

If not I'd ask for a $50 complimentary credit or first month free...

Awesome!!

How do I get this $25/month deal? The cheapest I see on their website is $40.

Seems like the $29 was offered by retention specialist.

Bump - any recent data points on this topic? I need to call and try to get some sort of retention offer, but want to know what's realistic to push for.

Is that a promotional rate, or can anybody choose it? In practical terms, how much will I notice it, and how much slower will it seem than the standard plan (25/5?) that I'm used to?

Good to know. The price is definitely tempting, but will I regret the downgrade? How does it compare in practical terms to their standard speeds? Is it fast enough to live stream video without delays?

My triple play recently went up to 160+ with 50mps Internet, dvr and all premium channels. At one point I was paying under $100 for all of this. I have tried to get them to reduce it maybe a half dozen times with no luck. Anybody have any suggestions?

You probably won't notice it much unless you do uploads which are plain slow. I have this plan for about 6 months and I'm very happy with it. A few months ago I bought a modem for $60 which brought my monthly bill down to $24.95 from $30.34 (they charge you tax on the $5 modem rental fee but the rest of the bill isn't subject to tax, go figure).

ETA: it can stream video just fine, maybe not 1080P, but 480 or even 780 works fine.

Bought this model on ebay ARRIS SurfBoard SB6141 DOCSIS 3.0 Cable Modem the actual listing is not around, but this looks to be the same one http://www.ebay.com/itm/ARRIS-SURFboard-SB6141-DOCSIS-3-0-Cable-Modem-Retail-Packaging-White-/191854717033?hash=item2cab6ea869

IIRC, beware of the sb6141 or 121 which don't have a jack to do voice calls if you have triple play or phone service through cable. those are great modems, but not for everyone.

I chatted them the other day and they bumped me up from 50mbps to 60mbps - paying $60.

Not sure if that's the standard rate or not.
