Topic Wiki

Below is a link to a list of modems that are compatible with Optimum. Depending on the speed you have you will need to get a modem that can accommodate that speed.
A modem has channels that represent the speed it can handle. It's displayed as download channels x upload channels, so a 16x8 modem means it has 16 download channels and 8 upload channels.

It's not recommended to get anything lower than 16X8 since speeds are only going up in the future.
Chart showing the channels needed to support the Optimum speed

  • Optimum 100, 8x4 or higher
  • Optimum 200, 16x8 or higher
  • Optimum 400, 24x8 or higher

There are many modems available on Craigslist's and eBay as well, there is no need to buy a new one as long as it's compatible.

Once you have the modem you can call Optimum tech support and ask them to provision a new modem and give them the MAC id located a the modem. They will also send you a prepaid FedEx label to return their modem and the price will be reflected on your next bill. You just saved $10 - $10.89 a month in fees.

Are Optimum's rates really different for commercial? Do they really not have all those annoying taxes?

I chatted them the other day and they bumped me up from 50mbps to 60mbps - paying $60.

Not sure if that's the standard rate or not.
Are you just getting Internet or other services too?

I find them harder to deal with than ever before. Can it be the new ownership?

I currently have Optimum basic for $30/mo (plus $5 modem fee) no contract.
Will be moving apt's soon. If I move my existing service, will I need to pay another $80 installation? or will they 'cover' the move?

Should I just open a new service at new location? is that plan still available?

I have a modem I purchased for $27 (used). I could sell it, as it's only compatible with residential optimum, not business. PM if interested.

I bought a new modem for $55. That takes 11 months to even out. After that, your saving $5 a month. Was a no brainier for me.

ETA: forgot they charge tax on the modem rental fee so it's actually about $5.34 monthly savings to be exact.
