Below is a link to a list of modems that are compatible with Optimum. Depending on the speed you have you will need to get a modem that can accommodate that speed.
A modem has channels that represent the speed it can handle. It's displayed as download channels x upload channels, so a 16x8 modem means it has 16 download channels and 8 upload channels.

It's not recommended to get anything lower than 16X8 since speeds are only going up in the future.
Chart showing the channels needed to support the Optimum speed

  • Optimum 100, 8x4 or higher
  • Optimum 200, 16x8 or higher
  • Optimum 400, 24x8 or higher

There are many modems available on Craigslist's and eBay as well, there is no need to buy a new one as long as it's compatible.
https://pickmymodem.com/approved-modems-for-optimum-cablevision-internet-service/

Once you have the modem you can call Optimum tech support and ask them to provision a new modem and give them the MAC id located a the modem. They will also send you a prepaid FedEx label to return their modem and the price will be reflected on your next bill. You just saved $10 - $10.89 a month in fees.

Interesting.
Did you try going to the store and asking for the equipment without installation?
No.. I found this out after the fact. Imho it would work if you're persistent about it.

I have had Optimum home phone + internet for the last two years for approximately $65 a month.
Now that the promotion is ending it will go up to approximately $95.
Verizon wants $73 + tax, besides installation fee.
Can anyone advise how I can continue to pay approximately $65 a month with either Optimum or Verizon (preferably Optimum)?
Thank you.
FTR, once verizon adds the tax, it may be well over $95. It's worth finding out before you switch.
Workflowy. You won't know what you're missing until you try it.

Which modem does optimum give when you rent from them?
Also I see many cable modems that can be bought, would all of them work with optimum? Which one is best?
Sorry if this was discussed already, didn't wanna go through 65 pages

My 39.95 plan from optimum just went up to $55/month. Are there any cheaper plans out there (I tried searching the forums for cheap internet plans, nothing came up within the last few years)?

Also, if I want to buy a modem/router, so I can get rid of that $5 monthly fee, what's the best way to do that?

Vierzon Fios would cost $50/month for 50/50, with no installation fees (since I'm switching to them).

That's if I buy my own router - would this work (phone rep said this model should work): https://www.amazon.com/Verizon-Router-Actiontec-MI424WR-Rev/dp/B00QGDLA5Y/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1477667301&sr=8-1&keywords=router+mi424wr

What's the best strategy once Optimum 2 year promotion expired? They now want $100 for just internet and phone (including $10 for Modem rental, which they just started charging recently, but I was reluctant to buy something else, in case I leave them).
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!

Step 1: Switch phone to Obi. Bill should go down to $50-$60 for just internet.

I've been there before, but Obi is not as reliable as Optimum voice. I can live with it (I don't use house phone) but DW was unhappy.

Considering moving to Verizon Fios - according to their quote, even after taxes, it should be $50 for first year, same as optimum.

Pros - better speed (25/25), likely better reliability.

Cons - no free optimum wifi.

Curious to hear the thoughts of others.

I'm sure you can find someone that will give you their optimum login if the wifi is really a concern.
