Below is a link to a list of modems that are compatible with Optimum. Depending on the speed you have you will need to get a modem that can accommodate that speed.
A modem has channels that represent the speed it can handle. It's displayed as download channels x upload channels, so a 16x8 modem means it has 16 download channels and 8 upload channels.

It's not recommended to get anything lower than 16X8 since speeds are only going up in the future.
Chart showing the channels needed to support the Optimum speed

  • Optimum 100, 8x4 or higher
  • Optimum 200, 16x8 or higher
  • Optimum 400, 24x8 or higher

There are many modems available on Craigslist's and eBay as well, there is no need to buy a new one as long as it's compatible.
https://pickmymodem.com/approved-modems-for-optimum-cablevision-internet-service/

Once you have the modem you can call Optimum tech support and ask them to provision a new modem and give them the MAC id located a the modem. They will also send you a prepaid FedEx label to return their modem and the price will be reflected on your next bill. You just saved $10 - $10.89 a month in fees.

Is Optimum 10 (Formerly 5) going to be changed to 20 soon?

I currently have OP 10 for $24.95. I just got a mailing for OP 20 for $19.99 for 1 year. Any way I can get that applied to an existing account? I assume not.

(If I cancel existing service and apply for new service with this deal, I'd be charged a new install fee, I assume? which would exactly cancel out the $5/mo*1yr savings...)

I wouldn't assume so until I see it. Optimum basics is for people they feel would not pay more than $25/month so I don't see why they would decide to give them the same speed as the regular users paying $45 or so monthly.

they recently bumped basic from 5 to 10. (not likely another bump soon)
Isn't standard now 50?

In any case, worth asking about these offers for my existing account? Or waste of time?

Standard is still 25.
Which offer do you refer to?

Interesting pricing guide for Brooklyn and Bronx. I wonder if they will honor this pricing if you call them up. Seems like you can get Optimum 20 for $29.99 (without modem lease charges), which is a very decent rate.

I have a business account and my price keeps creeping up. Every time I set a maximum for the auto-bill to credit card, a few months later the charge doesn't go through because it's above the maximum threshold I put for automatic billing.

I started at under $60 for internet and phone with no taxes and no modem fees, and am now up to over $111 due to rate increase, modem fees, and some taxes.

I tried calling Optimum to get a better deal, but the agent on the phone was steadfast that I can't get a better deal.

Is my only option to switch to Verizon for a month or two, and then get them to offer me something in order to switch back?
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!

Call them to "close your account" or lower your speeds they seem to make offers pretty quickly

I called today and said that my neighbor got an offer of 24.95 per month. (I saw the mailer, and neighbor said I could take it.) she said that it is really $10 more for the modem rental, and that the slow speed of 10mpbs will be as bad as dial-up. I asked if this is only for a year, but she said it is their every day price. I happily switched to this rate. I use Internet only, not any of the other services like Voice or TV. I now will look for a modem to buy to save money on the rental.

modem should be $5 not 10.
If you're a new customer try getting the promo for "Optimum 20" for $20/month for 1 year (you can switch to 10/$25 after that)

I'm not a new customer so I don't know if I can get the optimum 20 deal. The modem fee on the optimum 24.95 deal I am now on clearly says $10/mo modem rental. I will buy one after pesach, too busy now.
