Below is a link to a list of modems that are compatible with Optimum. Depending on the speed you have you will need to get a modem that can accommodate that speed.
A modem has channels that represent the speed it can handle. It's displayed as download channels x upload channels, so a 16x8 modem means it has 16 download channels and 8 upload channels.

It's not recommended to get anything lower than 16X8 since speeds are only going up in the future.
Chart showing the channels needed to support the Optimum speed

  • Optimum 100, 8x4 or higher
  • Optimum 200, 16x8 or higher
  • Optimum 400, 24x8 or higher

There are many modems available on Craigslist's and eBay as well, there is no need to buy a new one as long as it's compatible.
https://pickmymodem.com/approved-modems-for-optimum-cablevision-internet-service/

Once you have the modem you can call Optimum tech support and ask them to provision a new modem and give them the MAC id located a the modem. They will also send you a prepaid FedEx label to return their modem and the price will be reflected on your next bill. You just saved $10 - $10.89 a month in fees.

Yep, asked for a current deal (I got sent at another address) and received it. Make sure you get email confirmation.

they offered me a new "promo" of 60 for phone/internet (up from 50), but that was the best they would do

The optimum 10 plan speed (available to existing customers) is plenty fast. I have no problem streaming on that speed.
Surprisingly, their latest voice offer is not getting any attention. I have not seen any public advertisement for it, but I believe it is available to any internet only customer. Basically they are offering $5/month for the first 12 months and $10 or $15/month after that (depending on market?), comes with all the standard features they advertise. (saw this in an email).
I thought they would want to charge to port a number, but they don't.

I bought an Arris 1602 & it's been fine. There is a website which lists the acceptable ones for optimum. I chatted online and they sent me a link. Basically it was the either of the 822 or 1602 iirc. I got one on ebay for around $50.

I bought the Arris Sb6141 recommended by Wirecutter - http://thewirecutter.com/reviews/best-cable-modem/ - and it works just fine.

Indeed it's a fine modem, but I don't think it is a telephony modem, so if you want the option to use optimum voice, choose from the models I mentioned.

The price just keeps on going up. If I cancel and reorder to the same address using my wife's name will they realize and if yes will they charge me the higher rate or not?
It's worth too much.

Did you try calling and saying that Verizon is giving you better price and if optimum doesn't match you will cancel?
But putting on spouses name works

No, you just need to ask for a self-install. If you had service already at that location, you can do it yourself...

On Friday I called again and told them my price just went up to $70 a month for 50 or 60mb (including modem rental fee) while on their website they are offering 100mb speed for $40 no contract. Anyway after a brief hold her tells me my new price is $45 (inc $5 for modem rental fee) for 100mb speed and I'll be receiving a new modem in the mail.
That is while I got a letter several weeks ago that my monthly fee is going up to$70 and getting bombarded with calls from Optimum to pay even more for faster internet! What the Chutzpah? They wanted me to pay more then I was paying while on their website they offer more for less.. Sounds like cellphone carrier practice to me. Otherwise I'm pretty happy with their service.
It's worth too much.

BTW, on slickdeals.net homepage right now is a link to a used sb6121 for like $12, which should work for optimum. A great deal if you want to avoid the modem rental fee.
