Below is a link to a list of modems that are compatible with Optimum. Depending on the speed you have you will need to get a modem that can accommodate that speed.
A modem has channels that represent the speed it can handle. It's displayed as download channels x upload channels, so a 16x8 modem means it has 16 download channels and 8 upload channels.

It's not recommended to get anything lower than 16X8 since speeds are only going up in the future.
Chart showing the channels needed to support the Optimum speed

  • Optimum 100, 8x4 or higher
  • Optimum 200, 16x8 or higher
  • Optimum 400, 24x8 or higher

There are many modems available on Craigslist's and eBay as well, there is no need to buy a new one as long as it's compatible.

Once you have the modem you can call Optimum tech support and ask them to provision a new modem and give them the MAC id located a the modem. They will also send you a prepaid FedEx label to return their modem and the price will be reflected on your next bill. You just saved $10 - $10.89 a month in fees.

I got a lower price faster speed by calling Optimum and talking to the service cancel department. The usual reps don't care but when I selected cancel service suddenly the rep who picked up didn't even try any offers he just asked me why so I   told him you are offering cheaper rates for even faster speeds without a contract for new customers and he lowered my rate and upped the speeds. May be pure luck dunno.
It's worth too much.

I bought an Arris 1602 & it's been fine. There is a website which lists the acceptable ones for optimum. I chatted online and they sent me a link. Basically it was the either of the 822 or 1602 iirc. I got one on ebay for around $50.

Also remember that if you use optimum voice you need a telephony modem, which the 2 listed  above are.

I bought a refurbished Arris SurfBoard SB6141. I spoke to Optimum tech support before and they verified that it will be compatible (for internet, not voice).

Hey optimum has a deal $20 for optimum 20 but you have to pay for installation. Can I sign up for optimum 100 to get free installation and then downgrade to the lower price?
