Topic Wiki

Below is a link to a list of modems that are compatible with Optimum. Depending on the speed you have you will need to get a modem that can accommodate that speed.
A modem has channels that represent the speed it can handle. It's displayed as download channels x upload channels, so a 16x8 modem means it has 16 download channels and 8 upload channels.

It's not recommended to get anything lower than 16X8 since speeds are only going up in the future.
Chart showing the channels needed to support the Optimum speed

  • Optimum 100, 8x4 or higher
  • Optimum 200, 16x8 or higher
  • Optimum 400, 24x8 or higher

There are many modems available on Craigslist's and eBay as well, there is no need to buy a new one as long as it's compatible.
https://pickmymodem.com/approved-modems-for-optimum-cablevision-internet-service/

Once you have the modem you can call Optimum tech support and ask them to provision a new modem and give them the MAC id located a the modem. They will also send you a prepaid FedEx label to return their modem and the price will be reflected on your next bill. You just saved $10 - $10.89 a month in fees.

I am curious. Is it just for 1 year the optimum 20 for $24.99, or is it just the regular price?  I am on optimum 10 for that price and wonder if I can do better.

We were paying $75 + $5 tax for Voice & Internet (50/5). No modem fee.
Our promotion ended and the bill is going up to about $95.
We called to cancel and switch to Verizon and Optimum offered to continue our pricing for another year but a modem fee would be added. We agreed.
Now I read some of this thread and also see Optimum offering new customers $50 for 1 year of voice and internet (100/35) with $10 modem fee.
Is it worth a try to get that price even though we're not new customers?

I just signed up. I was told the price is $24.99 for the optimum 20 plan. Can any recent sign uppee confirm that?

They're weird...we're moving, wife asked as a new customer, was told $25 plus modem fee. I called to move current line and was quoted $20 plus $10 for modem rental.

For $10 a month buy your own modem. Now saying that does optimum allow the customer to use their own modem?
It's worth too much.

I got this.

Any docsis 3.0 modem should work fine up to 100 mbps. If you want Optimum voice, then make sure it has a jack for telephony. If you're on a faster plan, then get a docsis 3.1 modem.

Most modems do not have built in Wi-Fi. Generally you have a router for that. I think the question is, are there any modems that support voice with built in Wi-Fi for sale.

-1 Most modems these days do come with wifi, only grandfathered older ones do not
If it's not free shipping it's not worth it.

-1. Take a quick look at Amazon for recently released new low-mid end modems.

Good tip.
I guess the only question remaining is if you still get the 20mbps promo price if you downgrade.

Route your house phone number to your cell phone via google voice?. Then eliminate optimum voice.

Who wants their house phone always ringing on their cell phone?

If anything, recommend he get an OBi type device and stop paying for Voice service.
