Below is a link to a list of modems that are compatible with Optimum. Depending on the speed you have you will need to get a modem that can accommodate that speed.
A modem has channels that represent the speed it can handle. It's displayed as download channels x upload channels, so a 16x8 modem means it has 16 download channels and 8 upload channels.

It's not recommended to get anything lower than 16X8 since speeds are only going up in the future.
Chart showing the channels needed to support the Optimum speed

  • Optimum 100, 8x4 or higher
  • Optimum 200, 16x8 or higher
  • Optimum 400, 24x8 or higher

There are many modems available on Craigslist's and eBay as well, there is no need to buy a new one as long as it's compatible.
https://pickmymodem.com/approved-modems-for-optimum-cablevision-internet-service/

Once you have the modem you can call Optimum tech support and ask them to provision a new modem and give them the MAC id located a the modem. They will also send you a prepaid FedEx label to return their modem and the price will be reflected on your next bill. You just saved $10 - $10.89 a month in fees.

what do you mean by ''didn't have a choice''?
They wouldn't even let me keep my online account, I had to create a new account with a new username.
I wonder what people who type "u" instead of "you" do with all their free time.

No, Google Wifi is a router.

The modem is your bridge to Optimum. The router (plugged into the modem) is what your devices connect to. Nowadays you can get a modem+router combo device.

Some modem options:
I got this.

Any docsis 3.0 modem should work fine up to 100 mbps. If you want Optimum voice, then make sure it has a jack for telephony. If you're on a faster plan, then get a docsis 3.1 modem.
I got this one:

1. DROPR. I was told that I can only use an optimum-approved modem to get rid of the modem charge. This is not true. Any docsis 3.0 modem should work fine. Just connect your modem and send theirs back.

2. Here's the link to get a shipping label for the modem: https://www.optimum.net/pages/equipmentShippingInstructions.html

3. If you have phone also, not only internet, make sure you get a modem that also does phone.

AFAIK, modems are not simply 'plug and play' you need to call Optimum to provision it. Not disagreeing with anything you posted, just pointing out that setting up the modem is more involved than "Just connect your modem and send theirs back."

I'm paying $39.99 for 100 Mbps on a promo. I bought the modem so no fees there. Pretty good deal IMO. Plus, my neighbor pays $20/mo for using it so that makes it even better.

-1/2

IME when you plug it in and try to connect to the internet you should get an installation screen where you could do it yourself, no need to call.

Apparently I was not aware that Optimum started charging for modem even for grandfathered plans (my parents). I also see they added a $6.99 "Service Protection" charge to the bill anyone know what that is about?

Regarding the modem fee on grandfathered plans:

As per Optimum Service protection is if they come for a service call and they determine the issue is from the inside wiring, they would normally charge a $80 fee. If the issue is outside wiring, it's free. With the Service Protection plan, service calls are free even if the issue is inside wiring. No thanks, Optimum. They are refusing to refund going back since they claim it was added during an upgrade. Never happened but this is what you get when you don't review the bills monthly.

Don't know how long you've had this service protection, but I've been able to get a refund for one month that it was added to my account.

Anyone know if I can have two modems under a single Optimum account?
Use case: House is wired for cable but not ethernet, so in order to have two access points I can hopefully setup two modems and routers in either sides of the house, or I would need to install new wiring for a second access point using ethernet. I have not had good experiences with wireless range extenders and the like.

Each modem would need its own internet plan.

Ever looked into a Powerline setup? Much easier then installing new wiring..
If you don't have wired internet upstairs, look into getting a Powerline Adapter to bring the "wired" upstairs (it runs the internet through your electrical wiring), then use the Access Point as mentioned..

Have you looked into power line network adaptors, it did the trick for me

I got this.

Any docsis 3.0 modem should work fine up to 100 mbps. If you want Optimum voice, then make sure it has a jack for telephony. If you're on a faster plan, then get a docsis 3.1 modem.
I got this one:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00U2OUZNG?psc=1&ref=yo_pop_mb_yo_pop_mb_pd_t2

It is a variation of the one they give (TM822G), However, this one doesn’t support:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B015DBBPJA/ref=yo_ii_img?ie=UTF8&psc=1

While I was wondering what to do, JJ posted:

https://www.dansdeals.com/shopping-deals/bh/today-apc-6-outlet-back-ups-26-99-shipped-bh-2/

Got it instead for phone battery backup. As for the router, JJ saved the day again with:

https://www.dansdeals.com/shopping-deals/amazon/netgear-nighthawk-x6-ac3000-smart-wi-fi-alexa-compatible-router-129-99-shipped-amazon-70-price-drop/

It may be a better one than I really need, but hey, it was a really good price. Everything works great and had no problems getting it set up.

Thanks JJ!

What’s my best options? I need to setup phone and internet services

I have a Ooma wouldn’t mind using it (if it would save me money..)

If I sign up for Optimum do I need to get my own router?

TIA
