Topic Wiki

Below is a link to a list of modems that are compatible with Optimum. Depending on the speed you have you will need to get a modem that can accommodate that speed.
A modem has channels that represent the speed it can handle. It's displayed as download channels x upload channels, so a 16x8 modem means it has 16 download channels and 8 upload channels.

It's not recommended to get anything lower than 16X8 since speeds are only going up in the future.
Chart showing the channels needed to support the Optimum speed

  • Optimum 100, 8x4 or higher
  • Optimum 200, 16x8 or higher
  • Optimum 400, 24x8 or higher

There are many modems available on Craigslist's and eBay as well, there is no need to buy a new one as long as it's compatible.
https://pickmymodem.com/approved-modems-for-optimum-cablevision-internet-service/

Once you have the modem you can call Optimum tech support and ask them to provision a new modem and give them the MAC id located a the modem. They will also send you a prepaid FedEx label to return their modem and the price will be reflected on your next bill. You just saved $10 - $10.89 a month in fees.

IME when you plug it in and try to connect to the internet you should get an installation screen where you could do it yourself, no need to call.
I switched out my modem, but haven't yet sent back the Optimum one. ever since then (2-3 months), they haven't been charging me the $5 modem fee.

are they gonna slap me soon with an equipment fee for the price of their modem?
I have been paying the modem fee for years even though I have a DOCSIS 3.0 modem of my own sitting unused. I never connected it because their website only listed a few specific compatible models. I just saw your posts now. Can this still be done? Did you return the borrowed one or get charged a fee?

Unless something changed in the last few weeks, yes.

Did you return the borrowed one or get charged a fee?
Just connect yours and send back theirs.

2. Here's the link to get a shipping label for the modem: https://www.optimum.net/pages/equipmentShippingInstructions.html

I got this: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B0111MRLES/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
And it works fine. Just needed 5 min on the phone with them to provision it. :)
Re the Optimum modem, you can either ship it or drop it off at a local office.

I had to manually go to http://install.optimum.com but once I figured that out, I was up and running in less than 5 minutes. I can't believe I spent $150 in modem fees so far when I had this modem all along.
It's a good thing I did this now. I just noticed they doubled my modem fee this month.

I have the same modem as you. I recently switched out the optimum modem for it. Ever since then it seems like my internet acts up more than usual. It drops from my phone randomly and seems to be very slow as random times as well. When it’s working it works great. It just seems to be acting up more than usual. This may be my imagination. This happen to you at all?
TIA

Yes! I don't use it for phone service, but often I get "No internet", so I click to reconnect the wifi, and then it's good...until it's not... Maybe I should complain to Amazon, and replace it... Which one would be better?

Same here. Anyone want to try to get Optimum to push out the latest firmware update? It is several versions behind and Netgear says that the ISP pushes out updates.

I have lately had issues with specific websites not loading while on hotspot (no issue from home optimum service)
how would I troubleshoot that?

you sound like you have your routers and cable modems mixed up...ask ppl who are up there who they use as providers. maybe you'll get lucky and find someone who will give you their password to let you leech onto theirs , or you'll find an optimum hotspot your router can pick up.

Optimum 200/35 or FIOS 100/100? They are the same monthly fee ($40).

Anybody ever have an optimum technician come down & refuse to do anything if they see an obi device hooked up, or do they just ignore it ?

Why should they care?
