Topic Wiki

Below is a link to a list of modems that are compatible with Optimum. Depending on the speed you have you will need to get a modem that can accommodate that speed.
A modem has channels that represent the speed it can handle. It's displayed as download channels x upload channels, so a 16x8 modem means it has 16 download channels and 8 upload channels.

It's not recommended to get anything lower than 16X8 since speeds are only going up in the future.
Chart showing the channels needed to support the Optimum speed

  • Optimum 100, 8x4 or higher
  • Optimum 200, 16x8 or higher
  • Optimum 400, 24x8 or higher

There are many modems available on Craigslist's and eBay as well, there is no need to buy a new one as long as it's compatible.
https://pickmymodem.com/approved-modems-for-optimum-cablevision-internet-service/

Once you have the modem you can call Optimum tech support and ask them to provision a new modem and give them the MAC id located a the modem. They will also send you a prepaid FedEx label to return their modem and the price will be reflected on your next bill. You just saved $10 - $10.89 a month in fees.

Why should they care?
My internet’s been down since the latest (weekly) outage. I’m afraid they’ll just blame it on the obi connection & walk out.

You can plug the obi into your router.

Yes, I've had it happen once and I got a warning in my inbox or when clinking on the link. I think the first time you'll need to agree to the terms or something. Don't start emailing and telling them you didn't do it because that's when they'll go after you. Just ignore it and use a proper  VPN.
It's worth too much.

They get complaints from rights holders that they pass along

When you torrent everyone can see each other's IP address

I went for the Netgear CM500 modem paired with the Netgear NightHawk X4S (R7800) for my optimum 200 service and it works great, very reliable and good wi-fi range.

Optimum does NOT allow retail voice modems unless they are purchased from Arris store. We do not recommend these modems are they are very old modems which will impact your Internet speed. You can always purchase a Ooma device to get phone line and even lower your monthly phone bills.

It might be worth it to buy docsis 3.1 (Backwards compatible 3.0) as they are rolling out fib.

I had considered the CM1000 modem for this reason as well. But there was a $100 premium for the modem over the CM500. Being that the CM500 works for the Optimum 200 speed, I opted to go with the basic one and will upgrade down the road when the prices for DOCSIS 3.1 come down.

there is no point of getting 3.1 with optimum as Fiber is not Docsis. Docsis is only Coax cables.

this thread should be in tech talk IMO, I went there before looking for something like this thread and found this one: https://forums.dansdeals.com/index.php?topic=20682.msg1999291#msg1999291

Can I get by with this for the router: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00R2AZLD2/

and this for the modem: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06XGZBCKP

I plan on getting the 200 plan and internet only, no voice

If it's not free shipping it's not worth it.
