Below is a link to a list of modems that are compatible with Optimum. Depending on the speed you have you will need to get a modem that can accommodate that speed.
A modem has channels that represent the speed it can handle. It's displayed as download channels x upload channels, so a 16x8 modem means it has 16 download channels and 8 upload channels.

It's not recommended to get anything lower than 16X8 since speeds are only going up in the future.
Chart showing the channels needed to support the Optimum speed

  • Optimum 100, 8x4 or higher
  • Optimum 200, 16x8 or higher
  • Optimum 400, 24x8 or higher

There are many modems available on Craigslist's and eBay as well, there is no need to buy a new one as long as it's compatible.
https://pickmymodem.com/approved-modems-for-optimum-cablevision-internet-service/

Once you have the modem you can call Optimum tech support and ask them to provision a new modem and give them the MAC id located a the modem. They will also send you a prepaid FedEx label to return their modem and the price will be reflected on your next bill. You just saved $10 - $10.89 a month in fees.

And if it doesn't? what would be the next choice?
If it's not free shipping it's not worth it.

no point of getting optimum 200 plan and 24x8 modem

stick with optimum 100 8x4 or 16x4
or upgrade your network card to take advantage

I was just told by optimum that I need to provide the modem (to save on the rental fee) but they provide the wireless router?

What kind of router do they provide? The rep couldn't tell me for sure.

They provide a free router but you can use your own router.
It's worth too much.

so what do i need to get, i need a modem and wifi?
Any router will do. The modem you posted won't work for optimum voice. There aren't a lot of models that support it.

https://compatiblemodems.com/optimum/

Check that link it shows the ones that support it. I personally think the Arris 1602a would be best. You can buy it on eBay just make sure that the listing says compatible with optimum.

You got that exact one from Amazon or you bought that model from a different place/listing? The listing says it's for Xfinity.

So we don't trust the wifi router they will provide?

Well, I installed new service about 3 months ago for 100mbps. The router they gave was very often below 1mbps and when it wasn't it went to ~10-15mbps.

And I've had service with them before and had this problem then also.

I bought a linksys EA7500 and now my average speed is around 50mbps on 2.4ghz channel and 70-80 on 5.0ghz.
