Below is a link to a list of modems that are compatible with Optimum. Depending on the speed you have you will need to get a modem that can accommodate that speed.
A modem has channels that represent the speed it can handle. It's displayed as download channels x upload channels, so a 16x8 modem means it has 16 download channels and 8 upload channels.

It's not recommended to get anything lower than 16X8 since speeds are only going up in the future.
Chart showing the channels needed to support the Optimum speed

  • Optimum 100, 8x4 or higher
  • Optimum 200, 16x8 or higher
  • Optimum 400, 24x8 or higher

There are many modems available on Craigslist's and eBay as well, there is no need to buy a new one as long as it's compatible.

Once you have the modem you can call Optimum tech support and ask them to provision a new modem and give them the MAC id located a the modem. They will also send you a prepaid FedEx label to return their modem and the price will be reflected on your next bill. You just saved $10 - $10.89 a month in fees.

I have optimum service for several years now and I just moved. Two things: I want a better price so should I just cancel and call them down or do I need to use a different name?
Second when shlepping all our stuff the guy yanked the modem and the connector was ripped off the modem. So will they request for me to return the modem when cancelling or not?
I may as well buy my own as I'm not gonna pay $10 bucks a month rental fee.
It's worth too much.

When you move you are considered as a new customer and are eligible for those one year offers. Definitely get your own modem.

I didn't stay very far it's only one block down and around the corner so I'm still located in Boro Park.

If you plan on using it they tell you to bring it to your new house and the install guy will see that you have a modem so he won't give you another one.
If you don't use it then I think they do require you to give it back within a certain time frame.

I was on a $39.99 promotional rate for Internet only at 100 mbps for the last year. I just got a letter that in January, my rate will raise to $44.99 plus $10 for 'Optimum 100' basically, new rate will be $54.99. What has been people's experience with extending the promotion, I'm wondering if it's worth my time or I should just let it be..
