Topic Wiki

Below is a link to a list of modems that are compatible with Optimum. Depending on the speed you have you will need to get a modem that can accommodate that speed.
A modem has channels that represent the speed it can handle. It's displayed as download channels x upload channels, so a 16x8 modem means it has 16 download channels and 8 upload channels.

It's not recommended to get anything lower than 16X8 since speeds are only going up in the future.
Chart showing the channels needed to support the Optimum speed

  • Optimum 100, 8x4 or higher
  • Optimum 200, 16x8 or higher
  • Optimum 400, 24x8 or higher

There are many modems available on Craigslist's and eBay as well, there is no need to buy a new one as long as it's compatible.
https://pickmymodem.com/approved-modems-for-optimum-cablevision-internet-service/

Once you have the modem you can call Optimum tech support and ask them to provision a new modem and give them the MAC id located a the modem. They will also send you a prepaid FedEx label to return their modem and the price will be reflected on your next bill. You just saved $10 - $10.89 a month in fees.

I tried, no luck  :-\
If it's not free shipping it's not worth it.

Is it a one-time fee or a monthly recurring fee? I haven't seen it come up for me yet.

Just tried changing to the Arris sb6190 modem. Waited on the phone for 1/2 hour.

Not compatible :(

If you have around 50mbps than you can get cisco dpq3212 for $34 on eBay item # 253713296571

Or Arris tm822a / tm822g (I have one if you want to buy for $20)

If you have higher then you can get the Arris tm1602

I purchased a tm1602 and it doesn't seem to work. Any thoughts on what I need to do?

Did the listing wherever you bought it from say it's compatible with optimum?

When you called in to change your modem did a phone rep tell you any reason why it's not working?

Anyone here made the switch from optimum 60 to FiOS 100?
Seems around the same price, and looking for actual reports..
So far so far I'm hearing that Verizon's customer service is no good.. I'm asking now about the actual service.. cuz I have interruptions all the time with optimum.

Is it worthwhile to switch ownership of an Optimum account everytime the promotion runs out between different adults in the household, alternating each year between two adults, in order to maintain promotional pricing available to new customers indefinitely?

There may be alternatives to that, such as alternating every year between Optimum and a competitor such as Verizon, or making an annual call to retention department.

Are retention deals as good as new customer promotions?

YMMV, but you can get them to continue your original pricing.

I have a promo for $35 a month, 100 down/35 up. It's a $50 plan, with 1 year of $15 monthly discount.

What was the issue ?
I had Optimum 10 for $24.95. Download speed was fine for my needs, but 1 mg upload speed was just too slow for online backup.
Regular CSR were quoting me ~$60 for the next level up. I called them multiple times and they wouldn't budge. My first try with retention dep. got me 100/35 at $35 promo rate.

The main Optimum customer service number. When the automated system asks say you want to "cancel service" (and you're "not moving".)
