Below is a link to a list of modems that are compatible with Optimum. Depending on the speed you have you will need to get a modem that can accommodate that speed.
A modem has channels that represent the speed it can handle. It's displayed as download channels x upload channels, so a 16x8 modem means it has 16 download channels and 8 upload channels.

It's not recommended to get anything lower than 16X8 since speeds are only going up in the future.
Chart showing the channels needed to support the Optimum speed

  • Optimum 100, 8x4 or higher
  • Optimum 200, 16x8 or higher
  • Optimum 400, 24x8 or higher

There are many modems available on Craigslist's and eBay as well, there is no need to buy a new one as long as it's compatible.
https://pickmymodem.com/approved-modems-for-optimum-cablevision-internet-service/

Once you have the modem you can call Optimum tech support and ask them to provision a new modem and give them the MAC id located a the modem. They will also send you a prepaid FedEx label to return their modem and the price will be reflected on your next bill. You just saved $10 - $10.89 a month in fees.

Does it cost money if I let my friend log on to optimum with my log in info?

No. If you are referring to Optimum WiFi hotspot then you have a certain amount of devices that can be automatically signed in when connected to Optimum WiFi hotspot. Otherwise they will sign in manually and probably need to sign in again shortly thereafter.

It's worth too much.

The above post was for hotspot which is not your home/office WiFi.
It doesn't slow down.
If you mean multiple devices using your internet/WiFi at home/office then it's possible to be slow at times if too many devices are say streaming or downloading at once. And that also depends on your speed and router.
Check your account for how many WiFi hotspot devices are included in plan. Usually depends the plan with the cheapest one getting 3 devices and it does up from there.
It's worth too much.

Anyone get a new modem when upgrading the speeds?

I changed my plan a bit and I see I got a new router in the mail.
is it something that happens automatically as soon as you upgrade your speed and get a new router to handle the new speed?

They sent me the
Tm1602 for a 400MB speeds
While I was previously using the
 Tm822 at 100MB.

Does that mean the tm822 is not capable of handling 400 megabytes speeds?

That's a modem not a router. Seems it's required to deliver faster speeds. No you probably don't need a new wireless router for the new speeds as it's not gigbit speed although the AC and the new WiFi standard of AX has faster speeds and range and as they claim is smarter to go around obstacles.
It's worth too much.

For now have the three Google home Wi-Fi routers, one on each floor.

Perfect.
Thanks.
even if I should decide to downgrade  to a slower speed for less money, assuming it doesn't hurt to have the better one.
meaning I don't have to worry that it's not going to be compatible for a hundred or two hundred megabytes speeds?

I personally don't have cable anymore for a while now but should I get cable again I would buy the modem directly from them or Arris and not pay for years a $10 monthly fee.

I forgot to mention that I would order directly from Optimum or Arris if I wanted phone service from them because they don't provide voice service if it's not directly from them or Arris. Otherwise you can order online from other vendors other brands which need to mention they are compatible with optimum. If I'm not mistaken its max DOCSIS 3.0 that works with Optimum.

There's plenty on eBay for $40 used or refurbished.

I'm trying to use this modem, but for some reason Optimum is having a hard time finding it. I thought it might be defective so I replaced it, but still not working. Any ideas?

I bought ARRIS SurfBoard SB6121 DOCSIS 3.0 Cable Modem over 5 years ago. I used it for Time Warner and later brought it to another neighborhood and used it for Optimum.
