Topic Wiki

Below is a link to a list of modems that are compatible with Optimum. Depending on the speed you have you will need to get a modem that can accommodate that speed.
A modem has channels that represent the speed it can handle. It's displayed as download channels x upload channels, so a 16x8 modem means it has 16 download channels and 8 upload channels.

It's not recommended to get anything lower than 16X8 since speeds are only going up in the future.
Chart showing the channels needed to support the Optimum speed

  • Optimum 100, 8x4 or higher
  • Optimum 200, 16x8 or higher
  • Optimum 400, 24x8 or higher

There are many modems available on Craigslist's and eBay as well, there is no need to buy a new one as long as it's compatible.
https://pickmymodem.com/approved-modems-for-optimum-cablevision-internet-service/

Once you have the modem you can call Optimum tech support and ask them to provision a new modem and give them the MAC id located a the modem. They will also send you a prepaid FedEx label to return their modem and the price will be reflected on your next bill. You just saved $10 - $10.89 a month in fees.

Zero downtime. Call Optimum now and schedule that the new name is moving in on Date X, the same day that you plan closing the old account. That's how I've always done it.
Thanks!
They tried convincing me to take the trial of the double or triple play, which would of been $10 more for the first three months.

They call me like once a month and at least one of those mailers trying to get me to sign up TV/Phone service... I don't know how many times I told them I only want internet, but it's in the double digits.

Ask them to be put on the do not call list.

Interesting thing happening...
I saw that optimum had my rate going up to $50 a month from $30 due to the first year promo ending. As per advice I read on DDF, I "moved out" on the 30th and roomate was moving in on the 1st. They told me that I would have to shlep to an Optimum store to turn in the modem. They told my roomate he would need to wait until Tuesday for Optimum to come into our place to install internet... I haven't unplugged the modem yet and it's still working! I'm not sure if they just have it running in his name or if they forgot to cancel my account...
Anyone have any experience with this? I also want to know if I can turn in my modem to the optimum guys when they come to "install" the internet or if I'll have to shlep to a store...

why don't you check your account online and see if it was cancelled?

1. I've had that happen to me as well. The internet stayed on  even after i canceled the account, and IIRC, it kept working until the installation guy came (not sure though)
2.  I tried turning in the modem to the optimum guy, no luck with that for me.
