Below is a link to a list of modems that are compatible with Optimum. Depending on the speed you have you will need to get a modem that can accommodate that speed.
A modem has channels that represent the speed it can handle. It's displayed as download channels x upload channels, so a 16x8 modem means it has 16 download channels and 8 upload channels.

It's not recommended to get anything lower than 16X8 since speeds are only going up in the future.
Chart showing the channels needed to support the Optimum speed

  • Optimum 100, 8x4 or higher
  • Optimum 200, 16x8 or higher
  • Optimum 400, 24x8 or higher

There are many modems available on Craigslist's and eBay as well, there is no need to buy a new one as long as it's compatible.
https://pickmymodem.com/approved-modems-for-optimum-cablevision-internet-service/

Once you have the modem you can call Optimum tech support and ask them to provision a new modem and give them the MAC id located a the modem. They will also send you a prepaid FedEx label to return their modem and the price will be reflected on your next bill. You just saved $10 - $10.89 a month in fees.

Did you talk to Optimum CS or Altice CS?

Call the Altice number 8443583147 (the website security certificate is expired, if you don't feel safe applying online until that gets fixed).

I bought this a year or 2 ago https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B010Q29YF8/ for about $30
the rep i spoke to today thought it could handle 300 mbps (but we know how accurate she's been...)

Did you really mean a modem? You need a cable modem for Optimum, which you can buy used on ebay. For FiOS, you use the ONT that they install, not a modem.

That's a general answer not enough to give a solid answer.
Maybe this will help https://www.usmobile.com/blog/how-much-is-a-gigabyte/

If you are eligible and don't need something faster, try Altice Advantage Internet. If you are not eligible, try Optimum 20 plan, which may be further discounted with auto pay. Buy a cable modem to avoid paying a rental fee to Optimum. If you buy, you may want to get one that's better than what you need for the plan you are signing up for now so that it can handle the highest speed you think you might want to upgrade to later.

Thanks so much for your helpful info! What is the best rate I can get on the optimum 20 and how do I go about getting it? What cable modem is recommended?

Was told by optimum to get something like this. ARRIS SURFboard SB6190 DOCSIS 3.0 Cable Modem, Approved for Cox, Spectrum, Xfinity & others (Black) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06ZZGXJKM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_0plJFb06PVJAE

Is this DDF recommended? Also have an obi, would it work with this?

Just tried changing to the Arris sb6190 modem. Waited on the phone for 1/2 hour.

Not compatible :(

Obi would be connected to the router not the modem

So I take that obi would work either way. Thanks.
Interesting that optimum told me to specifically get arris docsis 3.0 and that that is what they use... ::) on amazon most people say it’s not compatible but some say it is... go figure...

Notice that Amazon has that in “used - like new” condition at a fairly significant discount over the price of brand new.

Usually, yes.
If you have the Obi202 or Obi212, it is a router, so you do not need another router.
If you have no other devices that need internet, even the non-router models can be connected directly to the modem. If you do that, you will want to secure it at least by changing the password to something long and complex enough for a brute force attack to take forever to crack it. Alternatively, use Optimum's web site to turn off port 80 .
