Below is a link to a list of modems that are compatible with Optimum. Depending on the speed you have you will need to get a modem that can accommodate that speed.
A modem has channels that represent the speed it can handle. It's displayed as download channels x upload channels, so a 16x8 modem means it has 16 download channels and 8 upload channels.

It's not recommended to get anything lower than 16X8 since speeds are only going up in the future.
Chart showing the channels needed to support the Optimum speed

  • Optimum 100, 8x4 or higher
  • Optimum 200, 16x8 or higher
  • Optimum 400, 24x8 or higher

There are many modems available on Craigslist's and eBay as well, there is no need to buy a new one as long as it's compatible.
https://pickmymodem.com/approved-modems-for-optimum-cablevision-internet-service/

Once you have the modem you can call Optimum tech support and ask them to provision a new modem and give them the MAC id located a the modem. They will also send you a prepaid FedEx label to return their modem and the price will be reflected on your next bill. You just saved $10 - $10.89 a month in fees.

That's good to hear. So it seems it was the modem?
Actually I think that both the router and modem had a problem. Now it’s sometimes down to 40mbps and can be anywhere between 40 and 200-300 mbps... not consistent... although it is way better than before and very reliable to at least work... so I’ll try to replace the modem as well and see if I get 300 mbps consistently.

Definitely weird.

It might just be worth it to pay the $10 for one or two months,( to rent the modem @lubaby) just so they can come down and give you a modem and to see if it's a connection problem or the actual modem.
Well worth the 20 bucks your time is money.

And once you establish what's broken and what's wrong, you can remove the rental fee by giving back their modem and buying your own.
I would definitely go with this idea if you're having speeds that buffer by the day.

as long as you have a working modem you can plug it directly into your computer.

Yes. How much are the additional charges, though? Which area is this? Optimum usually doesn't offer those speeds. Are the upload speeds 1Gbps, too? Or the typical 50Mbps?

Looks like a good deal if you have use for the speed. Meaning you might be able to get a better deal if you don’t need the “1 Gig” speed.

How can one bullet point say it’s the same speed as FIOS and the next bullet point call this “the fastest”? Hmmm...

I currently have only 100mps with Verizon and currently paying way too much. I may not need this fast speed though. They are also offering: 300 Mbps Fiber Internet

They send it to me all the time, and I'm a customer, but it says clearly that it's only for new customers.

But it's the same wires and phone line. I want to keep my number... Is there a way to get around that?

With Verizon, I have been told that they can stop service, then restart it as a new account, and they could get the number back, it wouldn't be lost. I don't know if the same would be true with optimum.
In the end, I didn't have to do that. After threatening to leave and speaking to a supervisor, I got the new customer rate, although they upgraded the hardware for the faster speeds, but it paid for itself after a couple months with the amount saved.

Finally settled my bill for 400mb at $64 after tax and paying for a modem.

Finally got around to buying my own modem using this site which gave me a good idea to know which modem to go with.
https://approvedmodemlist.com/optimum-approved-modems/

So can get my bill at $54 Every month and then if I lower my speeds to 300mb( don't see a reason to pay for more in a standard home?) I should be at $48-49 including tax and all.

They're offering 300mb at $35 maybe there's room to haggle for another $5 or so.

Curious what are you guys paying currently?

For my home line currently have some other provider which was set up years ago, though I'm probably getting ripped off.
Should probably set up a GV as the permanent option for making phone calls.(Though I do have my fax machine set up to my home phone number, not familiar with how to change that, and being that the phone is on the wall in the kitchen connected with the phone jack. I would need to find another jack that connects to that one and plug it into the Google voice box. (A bit complicated at first glance.)

Can someone explain. I have a bunch of smart devices (light switches etc) connected to my internet. Every few days it suddenly disconnects everything. I have to turn my router or modem on and off and then it’ll go back on. I bought a new modem online but still using Optimum’s router. Could it be their routers are bad?

Probably the free one..which allows anyone outside the home to connect to it.

Or get fios.. It's almost always worth it to get your own router.
