Topic Wiki

Below is a link to a list of modems that are compatible with Optimum. Depending on the speed you have you will need to get a modem that can accommodate that speed.
A modem has channels that represent the speed it can handle. It's displayed as download channels x upload channels, so a 16x8 modem means it has 16 download channels and 8 upload channels.

It's not recommended to get anything lower than 16X8 since speeds are only going up in the future.
Chart showing the channels needed to support the Optimum speed

  • Optimum 100, 8x4 or higher
  • Optimum 200, 16x8 or higher
  • Optimum 400, 24x8 or higher

There are many modems available on Craigslist's and eBay as well, there is no need to buy a new one as long as it's compatible.
https://pickmymodem.com/approved-modems-for-optimum-cablevision-internet-service/

Once you have the modem you can call Optimum tech support and ask them to provision a new modem and give them the MAC id located a the modem. They will also send you a prepaid FedEx label to return their modem and the price will be reflected on your next bill. You just saved $10 - $10.89 a month in fees.

Can someone explain. I have a bunch of smart devices (light switches etc) connected to my internet. Every few days it suddenly disconnects everything. I have to turn my router or modem on and off and then it’ll go back on. I bought a new modem online but still using Optimum’s router. Could it be their routers are bad?

Or get fios.. It's almost always worth it to get your own router.
The pricing is the same or cheaper?

I believe it's $40 for 300mbps, depends on location IINM.

Without any mention of the size of the area, how do you know a single access point is insufficient?

I had this with optimum for a while. It will just randomly disconnect and only quick fix was to restart modem and router. Optimum could not figure it out even after sending someone down (and then charging me) . Stopped happening though eventually.

Perhaps purchase a router, if it doesn’t resolve it then return it.

I'm not the most tech savy, but I would like to stop paying 10 dollars a month for a modem. Any recommendations as to what modem is good? I also have my phone service through optimum, so it would need to be a modem that is compatible with that.

Also, would I still need a router?

There are some modems that work as a router.

Or if you have a big or decent size home you're going to need a router that way you can have internet throughout your home.

There are many sites out there to help you find and decide what you need.

But here's a site I used in the past which you can actually write in the comments you're exact question.
It seems to owner of the site responds to your question which he seems to know a bit about modems and routers.

Finally settled my bill for 400mb at $64 after tax and paying for a modem.

Finally got around to buying my own modem using this site which gave me a good idea to know which modem to go with.
https://approvedmodemlist.com/optimum-approved-modems/

So can get my bill at $54 Every month and then if I lower my speeds to 300mb( don't see a reason to pay for more in a standard home?) I should be at $48-49 including tax and all.

They're offering 300mb at $35 maybe there's room to haggle for another $5 or so.

Curious what are you guys paying currently?

For my home line currently have some other provider which was set up years ago, though I'm probably getting ripped off.
Should probably set up a GV as the permanent option for making phone calls.(Though I do have my fax machine set up to my home phone number, not familiar with how to change that, and being that the phone is on the wall in the kitchen connected with the phone jack. I would need to find another jack that connects to that one and plug it into the Google voice box. (A bit complicated at first glance.)

The site I've used is called Dansdeals.com. It's great site that has awesome deals, and since it seems like you are not in a rush to switch, you can wait until they have one of their great deals again.

you can continue using the router from optimum, they don't charge for it.
I wonder what people who type "u" instead of "you" do with all their free time.

optimum offered $78.50 for 1 gig internet and phone. If i buy modem will go down to $68.50 price for life. I asked about the 300 mbps plan but was told after 1st year would go up $20-$25.

It's usually given for free for customers who paid the $10 monthly modem fee.
Don't know what their policy is after terminating the modem fee, do they ask for the router back or are they more than happy to use you as hotspot for optimum?

Optimum wants you to use their router, it helps build up their network of hotspots.

Not true. You can use a compatible modem as long as you don't get voice through them.
