Below is a link to a list of modems that are compatible with Optimum. Depending on the speed you have you will need to get a modem that can accommodate that speed.
A modem has channels that represent the speed it can handle. It's displayed as download channels x upload channels, so a 16x8 modem means it has 16 download channels and 8 upload channels.

It's not recommended to get anything lower than 16X8 since speeds are only going up in the future.
Chart showing the channels needed to support the Optimum speed

  • Optimum 100, 8x4 or higher
  • Optimum 200, 16x8 or higher
  • Optimum 400, 24x8 or higher

There are many modems available on Craigslist's and eBay as well, there is no need to buy a new one as long as it's compatible.
https://pickmymodem.com/approved-modems-for-optimum-cablevision-internet-service/

Once you have the modem you can call Optimum tech support and ask them to provision a new modem and give them the MAC id located a the modem. They will also send you a prepaid FedEx label to return their modem and the price will be reflected on your next bill. You just saved $10 - $10.89 a month in fees.

Ye I saw those prices but when I actually called they said it’s more like $53-$57 after everything. I only have optimum on my block too, so I’m just going to have to do it. Unless there’s a smaller company that I can get?

If you bring your own modem you might be able to lower that $53-57 by a bit.

What’s your typical internet usage like? Maybe cellular internet might suffice?

Ye cellular normally suffices, but when I want to watch a movie or something with DW on the laptop it doesn’t work out. Until now we’ve been using hotspot from my phone but I don’t have unlimited and then at the end of the month I have to add gb.

And btw which plan works well for movies? Thanks

I'm in the same boat. I was considering starting a new account, but I wasn't sure how it would work with them coming down to "install" their service. I ended up calling them and speaking to retention. I told them that I am considering starting to work off my phone's hotspot, because I cannot afford their price anymore, and they immediately gave me a $25 monthly discount for a year.

They even advised me to call back in 12 months and do it again.

If you have android, I suggest you try pdanet, http://pdanet.co/install/ it gives you unlimited Hot spot (depending on your service)

It’s non-transferable, but I saw it on the optimum website.
Optimum.com/speed

As low as $25/ mon for internet. For 1 year
$40 for 300 Mbps ($5 less than fios)
Etc
How much are taxes and fees?

@ckmk47, do you qualify for Altice Advantage (Altice = Optimum BTW, so if you have Optimum at home your address can get Altice service too). I’m paying $14.99/month for it and while the speed isn’t the best (30Mbps or something) that’s good enough for me.

FiOS's price is after fees optimum I believe it's before, either way you should be able to get something better then what your paying now.

I spoke to retention.  The best I could get was $63 for 200 speed.
I asked if I could get a lower price with lower speed, but no.

I would try again. They recently lowered me (after saying I wanted to cancel) to $54 for 200 Mbps which is now $43 since I returned their modem and use my own. Now I have a year of peace until they do this next year.

Yes, Brooklyn. I have what they call basic (cheapest) plan. Originally $25 for 10MB. But retention matched the online offer to 100MB.

After the paperless etc. It came out to $19.
