Below is a link to a list of modems that are compatible with Optimum. Depending on the speed you have you will need to get a modem that can accommodate that speed.
A modem has channels that represent the speed it can handle. It's displayed as download channels x upload channels, so a 16x8 modem means it has 16 download channels and 8 upload channels.

It's not recommended to get anything lower than 16X8 since speeds are only going up in the future.
Chart showing the channels needed to support the Optimum speed

  • Optimum 100, 8x4 or higher
  • Optimum 200, 16x8 or higher
  • Optimum 400, 24x8 or higher

There are many modems available on Craigslist's and eBay as well, there is no need to buy a new one as long as it's compatible.
https://pickmymodem.com/approved-modems-for-optimum-cablevision-internet-service/

Once you have the modem you can call Optimum tech support and ask them to provision a new modem and give them the MAC id located a the modem. They will also send you a prepaid FedEx label to return their modem and the price will be reflected on your next bill. You just saved $10 - $10.89 a month in fees.

Yes, Brooklyn. I have what they call basic (cheapest) plan. Originally $25 for 10MB. But retention matched the online offer to 100MB.

After the paperless etc. It came out to $19.
Wow!
I have the 'basic' plan too.  But they're charging $63 for 200 MB.  That's after paperless and auto pay.  And I may have to pay to rent my modem on top.
I definitely have to try again!

Did you tell them that online there are far better offers?
Yes.
The retention guy went to check what offers are on my account. That's what he came up with.
(I was switched to technical so I could ask what type of router to buy (to replace my rental unit) and she mentioned that I was on the 200 Mbps plan.  So )
I called again and asked if I could switch to 100 Mbps at a lower cost and was told that's my lowest price.

I suppose HUCA. I believe they have better deals online even for 200mps
As for the router perhaps a post around here will do you better then asking them, one things for sure never pay for their router, it's never worth it.

Google Altice Mobile.  One qualifies by having an educator, elderly or ?whatever? in the household.
Can you get home phone service with them too?

I don’t think so. And it’s called Altice Advantage, Altice Mobile is something different (it’s their MVNO), cellular service that often has promotions starting at $20/month).

It's the reverse. They make you pay for modem, but they give you the router for free, because they want you to be a hotspot for them. (IIRC)

Finally settled my bill for 400mb at $64 after tax and paying for a modem.

Finally got around to buying my own modem using this site which gave me a good idea to know which modem to go with.
https://approvedmodemlist.com/optimum-approved-modems/

So can get my bill at $54 Every month and then if I lower my speeds to 300mb( don't see a reason to pay for more in a standard home?) I should be at $48-49 including tax and all.

They're offering 300mb at $35 maybe there's room to haggle for another $5 or so.

Curious what are you guys paying currently?

For my home line currently have some other provider which was set up years ago, though I'm probably getting ripped off.
Should probably set up a GV as the permanent option for making phone calls.(Though I do have my fax machine set up to my home phone number, not familiar with how to change that, and being that the phone is on the wall in the kitchen connected with the phone jack. I would need to find another jack that connects to that one and plug it into the Google voice box. (A bit complicated at first glance.)

This is an amazing deal, are you in Brooklyn? I would try again. They recently lowered me (after saying I wanted to cancel) to $54 for 200 Mbps which is now $43 since I returned their modem and use my own. Now I have a year of peace until they do this next year.

I spoke to retention.  The best I could get was $63 for 200 speed.
I asked if I could get a lower price with lower speed, but no.

( altice may not be quick enough for my husband's work login. )
Don't know why I didn't do this year's ago, but just got around to removing my modem and started saving $10 a month. Silly that I was paying for that all my years with Optimum.
When it comes to getting money on down service or service issues boy are they hard to get ahold of and get them to process a credit.
Paying $54 for 400mb. And will call again to see if they can offer a bigger discount. Finding the right rep will do the trick.

It's amazing how everyone is paying a different amount.

You got to call up saying I can't afford to pay what I'm paying now, and either I have my bill reduced, or lower the speeds.
Or I'll have to look elsewhere for cheaper, or like meantioned up thread meantion I'm going to use my mobile phones hotspot...

I had my speeds upped to 400 and then asked for a discount which got me to 64 and then removed my mod for $10 which comes out to 54 and lowering 100mb would really get you $10 off each 100 but since you get a discount it will probably get you $5.
 So 44$ for 200mb.

Get rid of your Modem, don't do the same like me, waste of money renting one.

I entered this optimum conversation asking how to start a new account to get their super discounted rates. People here recommended calling (retention) for a better rate.
As you see quoted above, I wasn’t wildly successful.
The postcards from optimum advertising their introductory rate were addressed to ‘occupant’ of apt1.  So I went on line and ordered new service on my husband’s name and phone number. $40  They’re coming to install tomorrow.  My new modem arrived from BestBuy yesterday.  I’ll cancel my old service today.
If there’s any hitch I’ll let y’all know.

I did this many years ago, but it was quite the rigmarole explaining the install tech that it was a separate apartment/install. YMMV.

Why do they need to come down to “install” anything? Everything is already wired properly (just connect your modem to the cable).. They don’t have option for remote activation?

"The wiring is in place from the previous customer, I bought his modem off of him, I like his phone number so I bought that as well, and I don't want your serviceman in my house during covid, so please just do a remote install."

"Are you questioning me? Are you going to ask me next why I sound like a male when my name is Sara? Is Optimum really willing to engage is bias discrimination? Right, I didn't think so."

Sounds like a plan?

Then they're even more likely to catch on with what you're doing. IDK for sure but i'd assume they'd certainly not allow that because the promotional pricing is only for new customers.
