Below is a link to a list of modems that are compatible with Optimum. Depending on the speed you have you will need to get a modem that can accommodate that speed.
A modem has channels that represent the speed it can handle. It's displayed as download channels x upload channels, so a 16x8 modem means it has 16 download channels and 8 upload channels.

It's not recommended to get anything lower than 16X8 since speeds are only going up in the future.
Chart showing the channels needed to support the Optimum speed

  • Optimum 100, 8x4 or higher
  • Optimum 200, 16x8 or higher
  • Optimum 400, 24x8 or higher

There are many modems available on Craigslist's and eBay as well, there is no need to buy a new one as long as it's compatible.
https://pickmymodem.com/approved-modems-for-optimum-cablevision-internet-service/

Once you have the modem you can call Optimum tech support and ask them to provision a new modem and give them the MAC id located a the modem. They will also send you a prepaid FedEx label to return their modem and the price will be reflected on your next bill. You just saved $10 - $10.89 a month in fees.

Then they're even more likely to catch on with what you're doing. IDK for sure but i'd assume they'd certainly not allow that because the promotional pricing is only for new customers.
Is there any reason to not be upfront with them? "My wife was the previous customer, I'm the new one. It doesn't say in the T&C that it's not allowed."

Why do they need to come down to “install” anything? Everything is already wired properly (just connect your modem to the cable).. They don’t have option for remote activation?
As of now, apt 2 is hooked up to the outside cable box.
I’m starting a new account for apt 1.

I couldn’t cancel on line. I need to cancel by phone with the retention department. That should be fun. But they’re closed today. So I’ll call them first thing in the morning.  (Maybe my new account will become irrelevant)

Optimum job description:
Install tech / private investigator.

When I moved out of NY and got to area with Xfinity coverage, I signed up for internet online, went into the local store to pick up a free coax cable, plugged my modem into the jack, and called CS and had them activate my service right away (it was supposed to happen automatically with online activation, but it didn’t so I needed to call them).

If I wanted the pleasure of having a tech come to my house to do all that good stuff, there would’ve been a “in person activation fee” of around $80.

But this is Optimum, and they like driving everybody crazy.

Don't know why I didn't do this year's ago, but just got around to removing my modem and started saving $10 a month. Silly that I was paying for that all my years with Optimum.
Can you describe the process of setting up your modem & returning theirs?
Is it complicated?
Thanks.

Ganna be funny when they offer you the same exact pricing for the new line in order to keep you with them.

I called to cancel.  I got a nice, American lady who immediately offered me $43.49 !  the same as my new account.
And when I tell the tech department about my new modem, it'll go down $10 !
for 24 months!

Thank you all for your support and ideas. I was too chicken to try it without you.  :D

My tip for anyone else: Call to cancel.  Not to ask for a better rate.
Have in mind what you'd do if you really cancelled, so you're serious when you talk to the rep.
Note that 'new' customers are those who haven't had Optimum within the last 30 days.

So it's $43.49 before or after returning their modem?
-owning own modem (not renting theirs)
-paperless billing and autopay
-200 Mbps speed
$30 + fees = $33.50  each month

I think it's the same as the introductory rate for new customers but they get 300 Mbps speed (my account had 200 and that wasn't changed)

Wow exactly as I predicted! So the next stock to buy is....

Good to hear you got somewhere with all your plans.
Going to try to drop my bill a bit more, being that you got 33$ for 200, and I have 400 for 53$.

Thanks for trying and posting back here.

unless you get a modem that has a router built into it, yes you're going to need to buy a router.

Do you live in an apartment? a home?  all you need is a basic router unless you have a home which you would like to expand the Wi-Fi throughout the home then you going to need a Wi-Fi mesh system.

And if you read through these pages you'll see many different websites to recommend which modem you would need depending on your speed you have.

I actually set my own up without having to call them, was real simple, disconnected my old one.. put in my new one and went on to the optimums website and synced it automatically.

And as far as returning my old one, i have two off my old modems sitting around in my home, I'm waiting till I get a return label to ship them back because I don't plan on going down to the store.

depending if you're using there phone service, if you're not then any modem DOCSIS 3.0 should work
