Topic Wiki

Below is a link to a list of modems that are compatible with Optimum. Depending on the speed you have you will need to get a modem that can accommodate that speed.
A modem has channels that represent the speed it can handle. It's displayed as download channels x upload channels, so a 16x8 modem means it has 16 download channels and 8 upload channels.

It's not recommended to get anything lower than 16X8 since speeds are only going up in the future.
Chart showing the channels needed to support the Optimum speed

  • Optimum 100, 8x4 or higher
  • Optimum 200, 16x8 or higher
  • Optimum 400, 24x8 or higher

There are many modems available on Craigslist's and eBay as well, there is no need to buy a new one as long as it's compatible.
https://pickmymodem.com/approved-modems-for-optimum-cablevision-internet-service/

Once you have the modem you can call Optimum tech support and ask them to provision a new modem and give them the MAC id located a the modem. They will also send you a prepaid FedEx label to return their modem and the price will be reflected on your next bill. You just saved $10 - $10.89 a month in fees.

I personally am a bit wary, that's why I asked in here.
@Avid: what's the name of the company?

I got a mailing today offering Triple play for $79, and you get a free Kindle Fire within 60 days of signup.  Expires 8/15

I don't think there is a cancellation penalty, so you could sign up for triple play, get the KF, and downgrade to just Internet (and or phone) after 60 days.

I got the same offer few days ago. Is it also for existing customers or for new?

I bet it's new only (unless it's an upgrade offer, never seen those)

usually these triple play offers are good for upgrades but require you to be switching over from a different tv provider (at least the ones I always received)

It's not clear. Says if you are a current Optimum customer but don't have current TV service, you are 'eligible for this special offer'

Then it says at the bottom
Quote
Offer for residential DBS (satelite) & phone company TV subscribers with Optimum Online in good standing w/o current promo.

Not sure what that means. Maybe that if you currently have Optimum phone/internet you will get the $79 price but not the KF??

usually these triple play offers are good for upgrades but require you to be switching over from a different tv provider (at least the ones I always received)
Maybe that's what it means. It goes on to say you need a Non-Optimum previous video providers bill...

I know someone that did it for the iPod and cxld about 2-3 months later (or downgraded to internet only), but it's still an investment.
Dunno exactly how much he netted.

my dad just did it, you arent locked in, rather the rates are fixed, but you can cancel at any time.
It comes included with a dvr and hd box. I believe hes paying $70+6.95.

He switched from fios, so before He did Fios offered him similar service for $65 a month for a year.

just Fyi, this plan includes optimum boost (which is supposedly faster than Fios), net gear router, one phone line, and some sort of tv package.

Theyre basically killing each other in competing for everyones business.

Called them the other day to tell I'm switching to Verizon. They ask why. I say they're cheaper better faster. He says he'll match the price and speeds of Verizon, so I'm now paying 60$ a month for boost plus And voice (in year 2). I then told him that my router isn't capable of the new high speeds, so he says he'll throw in a router too! They really are killing each other

Think they'll bite even if Verizon doesn't service my block?

Did you have to show them any proof that your switching to verizon?
