Below is a link to a list of modems that are compatible with Optimum. Depending on the speed you have you will need to get a modem that can accommodate that speed.
A modem has channels that represent the speed it can handle. It's displayed as download channels x upload channels, so a 16x8 modem means it has 16 download channels and 8 upload channels.

It's not recommended to get anything lower than 16X8 since speeds are only going up in the future.
Chart showing the channels needed to support the Optimum speed

  • Optimum 100, 8x4 or higher
  • Optimum 200, 16x8 or higher
  • Optimum 400, 24x8 or higher

There are many modems available on Craigslist's and eBay as well, there is no need to buy a new one as long as it's compatible.
https://pickmymodem.com/approved-modems-for-optimum-cablevision-internet-service/

Once you have the modem you can call Optimum tech support and ask them to provision a new modem and give them the MAC id located a the modem. They will also send you a prepaid FedEx label to return their modem and the price will be reflected on your next bill. You just saved $10 - $10.89 a month in fees.

$30 is dead. Now minimum $40.
How is this better than getting just the internet to begin with for $40?
he said his first year promo was up

So that's it?
the 55/mo they are offering me for 50/25 is the best price I'm going to be able to get?
(no Verizon Fios to my building only DSL)
:(

I was just offered 45$/mo for 50/25. I didn't take it since I have a month left on my contract (though I probably should have). In a few weeks I probably will take it.

I also have no other reliable offering in my area. I told him I get from work a verizon LTE hotspot :)

HUCA'd multiple times.

Consistently told best possible price is 49.95 for 15/5, 54.95 for 50/25

Asked about $40 promo, was told "this is the current promotion"

Just upgraded to the more expensive one and started out getting 50/25 but now am getting closer to your download speed. A little faster on the upload, though.

Are you on wifi or wired?

Unplug modem for 5 min and replug, your speed should get back up.

That's the promotion. YMMV if you've already had the promotion.

It's only $5 more for the increased speeds
