Topic Wiki

Below is a link to a list of modems that are compatible with Optimum. Depending on the speed you have you will need to get a modem that can accommodate that speed.
A modem has channels that represent the speed it can handle. It's displayed as download channels x upload channels, so a 16x8 modem means it has 16 download channels and 8 upload channels.

It's not recommended to get anything lower than 16X8 since speeds are only going up in the future.
Chart showing the channels needed to support the Optimum speed

  • Optimum 100, 8x4 or higher
  • Optimum 200, 16x8 or higher
  • Optimum 400, 24x8 or higher

There are many modems available on Craigslist's and eBay as well, there is no need to buy a new one as long as it's compatible.
https://pickmymodem.com/approved-modems-for-optimum-cablevision-internet-service/

Once you have the modem you can call Optimum tech support and ask them to provision a new modem and give them the MAC id located a the modem. They will also send you a prepaid FedEx label to return their modem and the price will be reflected on your next bill. You just saved $10 - $10.89 a month in fees.

What is really slow and is there a cost for internet standalone?
Just saw this now. I have it, it's about 1mbps, about the same as 3g. It's doable, but streaming video needs time to buffer.

No worries, they wouldn't budge and were quoting my previous conversations with previous reps.

I just got phone and Internet for $50 a month for 6th months. Then $60 month thereafter. Though Verizon had for $45 a month phone internet. But had really bad experience.

Is that all inclusive or taxes and fees are extra?

I fell off Optimum's first year promo a long time ago. So it went to (i think) 49.95.

Then a little while back they bumped it up to 54.95. They said there has not been a raise in 10 or so years.

Now I get a bill for 59.95. I guess there is some kind of gradual increase going on.

When it jumped to 54.95 I tried to get them to reduce price, no go. Anything to say to them to get it down? Whats this $40 business guys are talking about? Anyone has same experience? thanks!

They recently became very stingy not willing to offer discounts anymore, but rotating between husband and wife etc. should work.
