Below is a link to a list of modems that are compatible with Optimum. Depending on the speed you have you will need to get a modem that can accommodate that speed.
A modem has channels that represent the speed it can handle. It's displayed as download channels x upload channels, so a 16x8 modem means it has 16 download channels and 8 upload channels.

It's not recommended to get anything lower than 16X8 since speeds are only going up in the future.
Chart showing the channels needed to support the Optimum speed

  • Optimum 100, 8x4 or higher
  • Optimum 200, 16x8 or higher
  • Optimum 400, 24x8 or higher

There are many modems available on Craigslist's and eBay as well, there is no need to buy a new one as long as it's compatible.
https://pickmymodem.com/approved-modems-for-optimum-cablevision-internet-service/

Once you have the modem you can call Optimum tech support and ask them to provision a new modem and give them the MAC id located a the modem. They will also send you a prepaid FedEx label to return their modem and the price will be reflected on your next bill. You just saved $10 - $10.89 a month in fees.

That's fine.

I am trying to figure out how to port my number from optimum to someplace temporarily and then back to optimum under a new account name.

Just realize that you will pay 20 dollars to port your number out of optimum and another 40 to port it into optimum.

I got internet and TV a few months ago for the same reason and when they came to instal my TV I told the guy I don't plan on using it he said if I reject the cable box I save about 7.50 a month- which I did
They ended up installing the box. Can I return it to the optimum store or is it to late and I am stuck paying every month?

Thanks for the info.

I think I will try to port it out and then back in.

Any suggestions on where I can port it to?
I'm not sure, but I think porting to Verizon is free.

May not be the same, but I got an upgraded modem for boost, and I then called and canceled the boost, and got $15 off each bill (and still use the upgraded modem).

worthless the upgraded is just capable for boost but if you cancel the boost they give you reg speeds in your "upgraded" modem try a speed test and you will see

That is true, however on the other hand I had tried a speed test while I had the boost, and the speeds were about the same - So its all bull.

I live in Lakewood. My rates for phone and internet were just hiked up from $60 to over $90 per month. I called and was offered the "lowest" possible new rate of $75 a month. Is that the lowest they offer?

Retention department just moved me down from 90.40 a month to 74 something, and offered to give me triple play for 76 and change. Thinking if I should have taken the triple play and get free live streaming on my tablet.

Nevertheless, I'll try the move one day, after some more feedback from you guys on how it went.

I'm curious why someone would signup for voice if you can get an Ooma or simillar VOIP and run it with an Internet only plan. why pay $60+ when Internet only is $49. The device would pay for itself in under a year.

My bill was hiked up from 30 to 60. I called and I had then give me 50 mbps instead of 15 plus phone for $55. Problem is when I do a speed test I'm only getting 20 mbps, do I need to upgrade my box?
