Below is a link to a list of modems that are compatible with Optimum. Depending on the speed you have you will need to get a modem that can accommodate that speed.
A modem has channels that represent the speed it can handle. It's displayed as download channels x upload channels, so a 16x8 modem means it has 16 download channels and 8 upload channels.

It's not recommended to get anything lower than 16X8 since speeds are only going up in the future.
Chart showing the channels needed to support the Optimum speed

  • Optimum 100, 8x4 or higher
  • Optimum 200, 16x8 or higher
  • Optimum 400, 24x8 or higher

There are many modems available on Craigslist's and eBay as well, there is no need to buy a new one as long as it's compatible.
https://pickmymodem.com/approved-modems-for-optimum-cablevision-internet-service/

Once you have the modem you can call Optimum tech support and ask them to provision a new modem and give them the MAC id located a the modem. They will also send you a prepaid FedEx label to return their modem and the price will be reflected on your next bill. You just saved $10 - $10.89 a month in fees.

just finished my second year with optimum & after multiple HUCA's they Are unwilling to extend the the promo price for another year, what I'm thinking of doing is shutting down my account & signing up as a new user with a different SSN.

My question is, is there any way to port out my number & then port it back on the new account, & would they realise
doesnt it go by address?

Don't give up so easily!!! While you won't get it for $30 (even as a new customer sign up) they'll offer you $40 or so.  I just did it a month ago.

Until now you would be able to get free phone service using a device called Obi (google it). That free service is now ending but you can still get it for $60 unlimited a year using a service called Vestalink.   http://www.vestalink.com/

am I missing anything?

How did you convince them ? It hasn't worked by me.

Nope! You just pay optimum for Internet and then $60 a year to Vestalink.

Call to cancel and get transferred to retention. Say you want to cancel because the rates are too high....

As discussed earlier, the $30 option doesnt exist anymore but you should be able to get it for $40 or so.

I got the $40 offer for my second year in Feb.
Took a minimal amount of pushing, I didn't have to speak with retention.
I was offered $45 with upgraded speed, asked for the $40 w/o the upgrade and got it no problem.

Exactly, the problem starts by the third year when they're already extended their promo price by a year,

just putting it out there, Verizon is now offering 15/5 speed internet only packages for new customers for $29.99 a month with a 2 year contract, or $39.99 without a contract. they are also offering phone internet and tv for $59.99 with 2 year contract ( could be $10 more without contract-not sure)

Keep in mind that Optimum's bill has no taxes or fees, and Verizon charges, which adds quite a few dollars to your bill.
