Below is a link to a list of modems that are compatible with Optimum. Depending on the speed you have you will need to get a modem that can accommodate that speed.
A modem has channels that represent the speed it can handle. It's displayed as download channels x upload channels, so a 16x8 modem means it has 16 download channels and 8 upload channels.

It's not recommended to get anything lower than 16X8 since speeds are only going up in the future.
Chart showing the channels needed to support the Optimum speed

  • Optimum 100, 8x4 or higher
  • Optimum 200, 16x8 or higher
  • Optimum 400, 24x8 or higher

There are many modems available on Craigslist's and eBay as well, there is no need to buy a new one as long as it's compatible.
https://pickmymodem.com/approved-modems-for-optimum-cablevision-internet-service/

Once you have the modem you can call Optimum tech support and ask them to provision a new modem and give them the MAC id located a the modem. They will also send you a prepaid FedEx label to return their modem and the price will be reflected on your next bill. You just saved $10 - $10.89 a month in fees.

Keep in mind that Optimum's bill has no taxes or fees, and Verizon charges, which adds quite a few dollars to your bill.
true by you can use it as leverage to try to convince them to lower your rate

i know verizon throws in taxes and fees- but they won be more than $10-15 more- and Fios service is MUCH better IMO.

Call to cancel and get transferred to retention. Say you want to cancel because the rates are too high....

As discussed earlier, the $30 option doesnt exist anymore but you should be able to get it for $40 or so.
So if I signed up to optimum for 54.95/month for 50/25 six months ago, I may still be able to push price down to 40/month if I am prepared to downgrade to 25/15, -- by calling retentions?

-- when I originally set up the account with them I HUCAd literally like ten times and no one would budge re the monthly price of 49.95 for 25/15.

Nope! You just pay optimum for Internet and then $60 a year to Vestalink.
Why the need to pay $60 a year to Vestalink, I'm seeing yearly plans for as low as $29.99?

That's an option too - for 500 min a month (approx 17 min a day).
While everyone's cell has free nights and weekends - most people probably still want the peace of mind to be able to talk on their landline and not count the minutes.

Are the minutes counted as outgoing + incoming, or just outgoing

Ok, I signed up to a basic plan & then ported my optimum number, vestalink says that it takes between 5-10 business days to complete,
I'm hoping that optimum will allow it considering that I'm past due

-1. Ive done it for 5 years...
I forgot to mention that the chances of the retention department agreeing to extend the price for another year massively depend on whether Fios is available in your area IME,
I don't have Fios availability so don't really have what to bargain with

Might be worth getting the 2 yr option for  cheaper and being locked into the price for longer...
