Topic Wiki

Below is a link to a list of modems that are compatible with Optimum. Depending on the speed you have you will need to get a modem that can accommodate that speed.
A modem has channels that represent the speed it can handle. It's displayed as download channels x upload channels, so a 16x8 modem means it has 16 download channels and 8 upload channels.

It's not recommended to get anything lower than 16X8 since speeds are only going up in the future.
Chart showing the channels needed to support the Optimum speed

  • Optimum 100, 8x4 or higher
  • Optimum 200, 16x8 or higher
  • Optimum 400, 24x8 or higher

There are many modems available on Craigslist's and eBay as well, there is no need to buy a new one as long as it's compatible.
https://pickmymodem.com/approved-modems-for-optimum-cablevision-internet-service/

Once you have the modem you can call Optimum tech support and ask them to provision a new modem and give them the MAC id located a the modem. They will also send you a prepaid FedEx label to return their modem and the price will be reflected on your next bill. You just saved $10 - $10.89 a month in fees.

Just went through an optimum outage in my area. Scary. No internet, no phone. Felt like the olden days.

Yes - same here.  Optimum Online is being impossible about lowering internet price.

Same here.  Optimum 12 month promo for 50/25 mbps was resetting from 39.95 to 59.95 with no luck after multiple HUCA's.  Called Verizon and just signed up for same speeds on FIOS for 44.95 for 2 years....not bad :)

Verizon only charges $44.95 for internet or did you get a special deal?

Rental-yes included, and taxes look to be minimal...the confirmation email says estimated monthly charges are $45.33

Ridiculous that here in Crown Heights you are located in the most populated city in the United States and most blocks are limited to only Optimum (at least in CH that is)...

You can also get Verizon DSL. Not sure about FIOS though.

DSL is pretty shoddy in terms of reliability IME. They do price out cheaper though...

I have Verizon DSL. It tops out at 1mbps if you're lucky, and it costs the same as FiOS or optimum. It's much too slow.

Can't you pay for higher speeds?

CMIIW, but I don't think you can get faster without getting FiOS.

Dsl is through the phone lines. If there is static on the lines it will be slow. Nothing you can do to speed it up.

There are different plans but you're still at the mercy of the wiring near your house. My parents were getting half the speed they were paying for and Verizon said there is nothing they can do about it.

I don't see that online by upgrade your service, so maybe it's not available in my area.
